Featured work : A very rare archaic-style Zun vase, made of copper and painted with « Hua Falang » enamels, decorated with mythical Bixie animals among foliated scrolls, Chilong dragons and upright cicada leaves.

🐘 Jade elephant with a gilded bronze harnachement and turquoise stones.
China, Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), Qianlong period (1735–1795), 18th century.

Height : 23 cm
Provenance : Former French collection

A jade elephant bearing a richly decorated gilded bronze caparison set with turquoise on its back, topped by a vase with ribbons (one of the eight Buddhist emblems, “Bajxiang”), the entire piece adorned with lotus flowers.
Elephants carrying vases on their backs were part of processions during the Qing Dynasty to celebrate Emperor Qianlong’s birthdays.
In the Forbidden City, we can see these jade elephants, standing on either side of the imperial thrones.

The entire composition is carefully balanced, creating a harmonious effect characteristic of traditional Chinese landscapes.
In the upper right corner, the inscription reads: 鳳麟州（洲）, which means “The Island of Phoenixes and Unicorns.” This legendary island is mentioned by the magician Dongfang Shuo in the “Shizhouji” (Description of the Ten Islands of the Sea), a work of mythical geography from the Han Dynasty.
A painted textile featuring a design similar to ours is also housed at the National Palace Museum in Beijing.

🏵️ Boîte en laque d’or maki-e en forme de biwa.

Japon, époque Edo (1603-1868), XVIIIe siècle.
Diamètre : 21 cm

Cette boîte en forme de biwa, un instrument traditionnel japonais, est décorée de laque d’or maki-e avec un trompe-l’œil imitant le bois et les cordes.

L’intérieur est en laque nashi-ji (fond aventurine) et les côtés sont réalisés en kin-fundame (fond d’or), mettant en valeur une combinaison raffinée de techniques traditionnelles de laque.

🏵️ Maki-e gold lacquer box in the shape of a biwa.

Japan, Edo period (1603–1868), 18th century.
Diameter : 21 cm

This box shaped like a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument, is decorated with maki-e gold lacquer featuring a trompe-l’œil design imitating wood and strings.

The interior is finished in nashi-ji lacquer (aventurine ground) and the sides are crafted in kin-fundame (gold ground), showcasing a refined combination of traditional lacquer techniques.

🌺 Vase en jade néphrite blanc sculpté d’une fleur de magnolia.

Chine, dynastie Qing, époque Qianlong, XVIIIe siècle.

Ce vase en jade néphrite blanc représente une fleur de magnolia épanouie sur sa tige, deux chauve-souris sculptées sur un pétale ; l’ensemble se reposant sur une branche grimpante de champignons « lingzhi » sur un côté.

This white nephrite jade vase depicts a magnolia flower in full bloom on its stem, with two bats carved on a petal ; the whole rests on a climbing branch of “lingzhi” mushrooms on one side.
