What is a masterpiece when the one who made it never set out to make one? The works gathered here arise from no artistic ambition but from a far more urgent necessity: to set the world in order, to mend it at times, or — when it becomes decidedly uninhabitable — to invent another. From the universe Wölfli rebuilt within the walls of his cell to Zemánková’s botany that no science could ever name, the exhibition brings together these « individual mythologies », as Szeemann called them: cosmogonies whose maker is at once architect and sole inhabitant.
Their elsewhere is neither geographic, nor historical, nor stylistic: it is intimate. These creators were perhaps never outside art; they simply stood in a place art had not yet learned to look.
