On the occasion of BRAFA Art Fair, Brame & Lorenceau is pleased to present this composition by Wifredo Lam (1902-1982)
´Femme au chapeau'
1942
Gouache and charcoal on paper
105 x 83cm - 41''1/4 x 32''3/4
This large composition was executed after the artist's return to him homeland of Cuba.
Having previously traveled to Europe the artist settled in Paris where he met André Breton founder of the Surrealism movement and several of the movement artists as well as Pablo Picasso.
In 1940 in the early war years the artist embarks on a boat together with Breton, André Masson towards Martinique
further to which Lam decides to join Cuba.
Upon his arrival Lam develops an aesthetic in connection with his African origin.
Femme au chapeau, is a striking exemple of this new expression fusing the learning the artist made during his years in Europe in contact with the modern ideas including the ones of Pablo Picasso and his own cultural heritage.
The composition presents an hybridation of human figure, vegetal elements as well as animal details relevant of tribal culture.
This wonderful composition by Lam is visible on our booth no006 until February 1st.
Looking forward to your visit
