Diane de Polignac Gallery is delighted to participate in the 9th edition of the Printemps asiatique, June 5-8, 2026. On this occasion, we will be exhibiting works on paper by Sanyu (1895-1966), highlighting his unique mastery of Chinese ink.

Albert Bitran (1931, Istanbul - 2018, Paris) is a major artist of the second half of the 20th century. Arriving in Paris in 1948 to study architecture, he quickly turned to painting.

His beginnings were marked by geometric abstraction. He exhibited at the Salon de l’Art libre, at Galerie Denise René, at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, at Galerie Arnaud and Galerie Ariel. He then evolved toward abstract landscape in 1955.

Naturalized French in 1958, he developed an international career from the 1960s, particularly in Northern European countries. He explored various themes and techniques, creating the series of « Ateliers » (Studios), « Doubles » (Doubles), « Grandes Formes » (Large Forms), as well as ceramics, engravings, and sculptures.

The 2000s saw the exploration of the « Noirs » (Blacks) theme. The archiving of his work for a Catalogue Raisonné was initiated by his wife in 2004.

The Diane de Polignac Gallery, in collaboration with the Albert Bitran Archives, dedicates its first exhibition to the artist’s “Intérieur - Extérieur” period, covering the years 1970 to the early 2000s.

Diane de Polignac Gallery, in collaboration with the Albert Bitran Archives, dedicates its first exhibition to the artist’s Intérieur-Extérieur period, covering the years 1970 to the early 2000s. At the peak of his art, Bitran explores the relationship between form and colour to create a space that is at once complex, open, and fragmented.

The Diane de Polignac Gallery is dedicating a series of exhibitions to Sanyu (1895-1966), of which Sanyu, A Philosophy of Ink is the third part.

This exhibition fits perfectly into the current Parisian scene: between the Salon du dessin at the Palais Brongniart and the opening of the Matisse exhibition at the Grand Palais. Indeed, Sanyu, an emblematic figure of Chinese ink drawing, is nicknamed the Chinese Matisse.

Furthermore, the exhibition is in line with current events in Hong Kong, with excellent results for Sanyu's painted works at Christie's Hong Kong and Sotheby's Hong Kong.

Sanyu, A Philosophy of Ink is on view until April 30th at the Galerie Diane de Polignac!

Sanyu, A Philosophy of Ink is the third installment in a series of exhibitions dedicated to the artist Sanyu (1895-1966) at the Diane de Polignac Gallery.

Ancestral and demanding, Chinese ink requires years of diligent practice. How then to reconcile the physical constraint – whether sitting on a stool at the Grande Chaumière or on a Parisian café chair – with the search for a broad, uninhibited gesture, capable of manifesting a “supple and sensitive” line? The answer perhaps lies in the philosophical approach to Chinese ink: xieyi. Sanyu, already a master of ink thanks to his calligraphy training in China, arrived in Paris with this expertise. It is by fusing this know-how with the Parisian setting that he found the path to his singular pictorial expression.
