“Selected Moments”

A magnificent exhibition at London featuring works from the Shafik Gabr Collection (), which today comprises the world’s largest private collection of Orientalist paintings.

A dinner and speeches reflecting the spirit of this committed man, who has been collecting with passion for over 35 years, guided by a single theme: dialogue and understanding between peoples and cultures.

Thank you to Claude Piening, with whom we have built a genuine partnership between our exhibition at the Gallery, the Shafik Gabr exhibition and the Islamic Art auction week.

A huge thank you to Shafik Gabr for his friendship and trust, and to my friends Mehmet Keskiner () and Jorge Coll ( ) for making this artistic collaboration possible.

Goudji (b. 1941)
The Flying Deer
Silver, lapis lazuli, labradorite, sodalite, amphibolite

A remarkable sculptural object by Goudji, where craftsmanship and imagination converge. Combining silver with richly colored hardstones, The Flying Deer embodies the artist’s distinctive universe—poetic, symbolic, and deeply inspired by ancient and mythical forms.

Balancing functionality and sculpture, the piece reflects Goudji’s unique ability to transform precious materials into timeless works of art.

Philip de László (1869–1937)
Portrait of the Viscountess Gwladys Chaplin, 1915
Oil on panel, signed and dated lower right
“P. A. Laszlo / 1915 June 14”

One of the most celebrated portraitists of the early 20th century, Philip de László captured the elegance and personality of Europe’s aristocracy and intellectual elite.

This refined portrait of Viscountess Gwladys Chaplin exemplifies his remarkable ability to convey both psychological presence and social prestige. Painted in 1915, the work demonstrates de László’s fluid brushwork and sophisticated handling of light.

William Bouguereau (1825–1905)
Presumed Portrait of Martial Deveaux, 1854
Oil on canvas, signed with the monogram “WB” and dated lower left
56 × 46 cm

Painted in 1854 as William Bouguereau was concluding his stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, this striking portrait is believed to depict the engraver Jacques-Martial Deveaux. Executed in a restrained palette of blacks, whites, and subtle greys, the composition reveals the young painter’s remarkable technical mastery and psychological sensitivity.

Léon Bonnat (1833–1922)
The Barber of Suez, circa 1872–1875
Oil on canvas, signed lower left

A striking example of Léon Bonnat’s fascination with the cultures of the Mediterranean world, The Barber of Suez reflects the artist’s travels in the Middle East and his engagement with Orientalist themes.

Bonnat combines academic precision with a powerful sense of atmosphere, capturing both the dignity of the sitter and the vivid character of everyday life in Suez during the late 19th century.

The painting illustrates Bonnat’s mastery of portraiture and his ability to elevate genre scenes through a refined, painterly approach.
