As part of Paris Gallery Weekend, the gallery invites Hélène Aji and David Reckford to pay tribute to Alice Notley, the American poet who died in 2025.

Alice Notley est née à Bisbee, en Arizona, en 1945 et a grandi à Needles, en Californie, dans le désert de Mojave. Elle a fait ses études dans les écoles publiques de Needles, au Barnard College et au Writers Workshop de l'université de l'Iowa. Elle a vécu le plus souvent à Needles, à New York et, depuis 1992, à Paris, en France.
Elle est l'auteur de nombreux livres de poésie, d'essais et de conférences sur la poésie, et a édité et co-édité des livres de Ted Berrigan et Douglas Oliver. Elle a édité le magazine CHICAGO dans les années 70 et coédité les magazines SCARLET et Gare du Nord dans les années 90. Elle a reçu de nombreux prix et récompenses notamment le prix Ruth Lilly de la Poetry Foundation, qui récompense l'ensemble de sa carrière.

Alice Notley was born in Bisbee, Arizona, in 1945 and grew up in Needles, California, in the Mojave Desert. She attended public schools in Needles, Barnard College, and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She lived mostly in Needles, New York, and, since 1992, in Paris, France.

She has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Poetry Foundation’s Ruth Lilly Award, for her lifetime career.

A l’occasion du Paris Gallery Weekend, nous sommes heureuses d’inviter Sarah Holveck à présenter un ensemble de dessins en écho à l’exposition de Tiziana La Melia.

Sarah Holveck née en 1987, est diplômée des Beaux-arts de Lyon (2010) et des Beaux-arts de Cergy (2012).

Elle cofonde en 2014 l’artist run space Pauline Perplexe à Arcueil.

To mark her exhibition at the gallery, Tiziana La Melia invites Lisa Robertson to speak about her literary work.

A l’occasion de son exposition à la galerie, Tiziana La Melia invite Lisa Robertson à parler de son œuvre littéraire.

Born in Toronto, poet and novelist Lisa Robertson learned to write in a community of visual artists and poets in Vancouver, where she lived for 25 years, participating in the collective cultural life of the city. Her work moves across various histories of materiality to address architecture, urbanism, maintenance work and textile tradition. She is formally prolific and works often in the context of the contemporary visual arts, writing essays, poems, scripts and narratives for and with artists, who have included Liz Magor, Amy Sillman, Justine Kurland, Kathy Slade, Moyra Davey and Vera Kox. Current work includes the novel Riverwork, just published by Coach House Books in Toronto, and in collaboration with sabrina soyer, the poetry collection I of Song, translations of the trobairitz poet Na Castelloza, from Nion Editions in Berkeley. She lives in France.

Née à Toronto, poète et romancière, Lisa Robertson a appris à écrire au sein d’une communauté d’artistes plasticiens et de poètes à Vancouver, où elle a vécu 25 ans, participant à la vie culturelle collective de la ville.
Son œuvre traverse les diverses histoires de la matérialité pour aborder l’architecture, l’urbanisme, les travaux d’entretien et la tradition textile. Lisa Robertson a une œuvre multiple, elle travaille souvent dans le contexte des arts visuels contemporains, rédigeant des essais, des poèmes, des scénarios et des récits pour et avec des artistes, parmi lesquels Liz Magor, Amy Sillman, Justine Kurland, Kathy Slade, Moyra Davey et Vera Kox.
Son roman « Riverwork » vient d’être publié par Coach House Books à Toronto, ainsi que le recueil de poésie « I of Song », en collaboration avec Sabrina Soyer, et des traductions de la poète trobairitz Na Castelloza, publiées par Nion Editions à Berkeley. Elle vit en France.

La Melia’s surfaces bear an existential weight, camouflaging under lightness or overload. Many are holed, pierced through, devoured. Wasps or ants burst frantically out of fruits, ravaging them in search of sap. Eyes widened in shock, a toddler (“the pup”) witnesses the spectacle, their child speech translated by subtitles: “Oh no! It’s dead!”. Skin, fabric, containers of all kinds – envelopes are understood in their capacity to not only drape but also structure subjectivity.(...)

Les surfaces de La Melia sont existentielles, camouflant leur charge derrière l’insouciance ou l’excès. Certaines sont trouées, évidées, dévorées même. Des guêpes ou des fourmis jaillissent frénétiquement des fruits, les ravageant à la recherche de suc. Les yeux écarquillés, un enfant (le « chiot ») assiste à cette scène de prédation, articulant une stupeur traduite par des sous-titres : Oh no! It’s dead!. L’épiderme, l’écorce, le tissu ; chez La Melia, les enveloppes ne servent pas qu’à contenir ou sublimer, elles structurent la subjectivité.(...)

Rendition is a hybrid cinematic essay that questions the documentation of “history in the mak-ing” by assembling a mosaic of materials-from personal memories and interviews to ongoing protest documentation-to tell the story of the Madgermans.
In 1979, 15,000 Mozambicans emigrated to East Germany (GDR) as contract workers, only to be abruptly sent back to Maputo after the reunification of Germany in 1989. Returning with a wave of Western gadgets that briefly flooded the popular imagination, these workers were left waiting for the balance of their contracts to be paid by a new, democratic Mozambican government.

(…)Tiziana La Melia travaille ce qu’elle nomme “une profondeur en surface”, celle qui sommeille en pellicule et rappelle les choses à une épaisseur invisible. Elle place les coulisses en devanture, exposant les costumes de son film dans la vitrine de la galerie. Elle conserve les revêtements, le résidu, plaçant au mur la couche extérieure utilisée pour ses spolvero – une technique de transfert d’image datant de la Renaissance, apprise lors d’un cours de restauration de fresques à Florence, où de minuscules trous laissent passer le pigment à travers le papier, formant des pointillés qui guident le geste de l’autre côté du mur. Ici, sur le papier, les contours s’élargissent et s’effacent d’un même mouvement ; les silhouettes se perforent et s’estompent, dans une nostalgie des lignes nettes. Elles portent la mémoire d’une première image et, en creux, le secret d’une seconde qui se soustrait à la contemplation. Le papier s’écorche, se compile et se désintègre dans des halos, rappelant que l’italien spolvero dérive de polvere, la poussière – le lieu et la substance auxquels tous les corps retournent. (…)

(…)Tiziana La Melia thus engages with “surface-level depth,” one contained within coating, film, and interfaces. She places the backstage in the storefront, exhibiting the film’s costumes in the gallery vitrine. La Melia sticks with what usually peels away, displaying as drawings the external sheet used for spolvero, an image-transfer technique learned during a 13th-century fresco restoration course in Florence, where pigment is brushed over tiny holes to create a dotted outline. Contours are thickened, though evanescent; silhouettes perforated and washed out, as if nostalgic for clean lines. They hold the memory of a first image and the secret of a second, “deeper” one we are never to contemplate; for the Italian spolvero derives from polvere, the word for dust, the site and matter to which all bodies return.(…)
