The film's development began in 1945 with a creative collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali. The storyboards for "Destino" (Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese) were drawn over eight months by Disney artist John Hench and Salvador Dali, but the project was abandoned by Disney due to financial problems associated with World War II. In 1999, Disney's nephew Roy Edward Disney, who was working on Fantasia 2000 at the time, decided to revive the forgotten project.
