The Lab is for the painters who got too busy.
The artists whose sketchbooks went quiet.

It's for anyone who still believes that making something by hand can change the way we see the world.

We're building a community around observation, curiosity, and the simple act of creating.

If that speaks to you, follow us.

The River Aude Artist Lab is incredibly excited to welcome artist and educator Gail Borowski to Quillan this summer.

Gail and I both attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit, so there’s a shared connection there that makes this feel especially meaningful to me.

What I admire most about Gail is the way she has dedicated her life to both making art and helping others discover their own creativity, while never losing her own sense of curiosity, experimentation, and wonder along the way.

Her paintings and mixed media work have a warmth and honesty that many artists will immediately connect with. Layered, intuitive, emotional, and full of observation and lived experience. The kind of work that makes you stop, look a little longer, and want to understand how she sees the world.

And honestly, after talking with Gail and seeing the way she approaches both art and teaching, you quickly get the feeling that she’s someone you could learn a tremendous amount from as an artist.

Over the years she has exhibited throughout the United States and beyond, created murals, published writing for art educators, illustrated children’s books, and inspired generations of younger artists through her teaching.

While in Quillan, Gail will also be leading a special workshop at the River Aude Artist Lab called Meaningful Beauty.

I have a feeling this is going to be a really special experience for the people who spend time around her while she’s here.

More to come on the workshop soon.

One of the things we care deeply about at the River Aude Artist Lab is creating opportunities for people in Quillan to connect with artists from the region who are doing thoughtful, meaningful work.

Marie Calmet is exactly that kind of artist.

Based in Fa, Marie is a printmaker and educator whose work is deeply connected to texture, material, atmosphere, and process. In Espéraza, she runs L’Atelier de la Place, a working studio and gallery where she exhibits her work and leads workshops throughout the year.

Over the years, Marie has become an important artistic presence in the region, teaching at the Carcassonne School of Art and leading workshops in places such as Collioure and Espéraza, as well as working across France and the UK in educational and community settings.

What makes Marie’s teaching so special is the way she creates space for discovery. Her workshops are hands-on, exploratory, and centered on experimentation, process, and personal expression.

We’re excited to welcome Marie to Quillan this summer for two special collagraphy workshops at the River Aude Artist Lab on June 26–27 and July 3–4.

You can explore more of her work here.
