Colmexhoma, USA Haunted landscapes. Forgotten roads. Stories carved into dust.

While the focus is on Baca (CO), Union (NM), and Cimarron (OK), neighboring counties also have their place here.

"The town of Prowers is, for the most part, abandoned. There is a large stone store and a number of houses, but only the store seems to be occupied.
The town was named after John Prowers, who was instrumental in the growth of the Arkansas Valley.
Prowers is located eight miles east of the John Martin Reservoir next to the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. The site is on the south side of the Arkansas River on Hill Road.
The post office operated from 1881 to 1886, then again from 1891 to 1893. It opened for a third time in 1898 and closed for good in 1933."

After sharing Kenneth Jessen’s photos and info about Pritchett last night, I realized that I’d actually already written about this remarkable Baca County community. So here’s my modest — but enthusiastic — contribution.

CLAYTON NAMED NEW MEXICO'S SCARIEST CITY (😁)
A 2018 report by KRQE.
"Could Albuquerque be the state’s scariest city? New Mexicans surveyed by the New Mexico Tourism Department said not even close. The Herzstein Museum, Hotel Eklund and the Union County Courthouse helped Clayton, a town 200 miles northeast of Albuquerque, earn that title. The supernatural has been reported at those three spots. Another creepy claim to fame for Clayton is outlaw Blackjack Ketchum."

PRITCHETT, BACA COUNTY
Photos and caption by Kenneth Jessen (2004).
"Occupied town, Pritchett is fading away. The railroad that once brought prosperity to Pritchett has been torn up miles east of the town. The town is a victim of drought and changing economic conditions.
Pritchett is located in what was once the broomcorn belt, but plastic has replaced this natural material in brooms. Farmers have turned to growing wheat, milo and sorghum. Livestock covers the rangeland.
The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe formed a subsidiary, the Dodge City & Cimarron Valley Railway Company, which built a rail line from Kansas to Pritchett in 1926 that opened the following year. Originally, the rails were to reach three miles farther to Joycoy, and based on the prospects of rail service, Joycoy was founded. Merchants who had set up shop were given inducements by the railroad in the form of choice lots to move to Pritchett. The move from Joycoy to Pritchett included the post office, and nothing remains at Joycoy. Pritchett was named for Dr. Henry S. Pritchett, one of the Santa Fe's directors.
The new town grew rapidly with plenty of open farmland. Soon there were a couple of lumberyards, state bank, hardware stores and three grocery stores. With the construction of three hotels and the addition of a drug store, service stations, a bakery and clothing stores, the town was complete. A trio of grain elevators was constructed by the tracks on the south side of the business district. Pritchett even had its own radio station.
The Great Depression of the 1930s, combined with a prolonged drought, created the Dust Bowl. Jobs disappeared along with the town's only bank. The Works Progress Administration brought in hundreds of jobs for those willing to work on roads, bridges and construction projects. This helped relieve Pritchett's depression.
Pritchett is located on U.S. 160 south of County Road DD and north of County Road CC."

To make up for some rather grim posts I’ve shared tonight, here are two photos of the world’s best-kept-secret capital. Both were taken by Jim Argo in July 1993.

THE GREAT BACA COURTHOUSE WAR (THREE COURTHOUSES AND TWO FUNERALS) đŸ”„
Photo 1 (1913): "The building on the left is the site of the first courthouse in Springfield. There was never a picture of that courthouse, but the old burned vault is sitting in front of the original site where the courthouse was burned."

Photo 2 (1907-1914): "The second courthouse in Springfield, which was also burned, but the vault was stronger than the first and stood for quite some time with the records until courthouse #3 was constructed."

Photo 3 (1919): "The third courthouse in Springfield, which still stands but has been built onto in the front and back.
It seems that citizens of Old Boston wanted the courthouse there, also the citizens of Minneapolis wanted it at Minneapolis, so the first two in Springfield were deliberately burned.
Old Boston is or was SE of the present town of Vilas, Minneapolis was north of the present town of Walsh about 8 miles. There is nothing at Minneapolis except a cemetery."

MARTIN BOWDEN (SEPTEMBER 22, 1884 – JULY 29, 1958) 🎂
For now, you’re still allowed not to know who Martin Bowden was — after all, as recently as a year ago, only 0.12% of Colorado’s population had ever heard of him. But before long, you’ll have no excuse. And a year from now, anyone claiming to be a Colmexhoma fan without ever having heard of Bowden will be hanged, shot, put in the electric chair, and sentenced to eat English food for the rest of their lives.
