Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust

Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust Welcome to the Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust page, keep up to date by visiting our website at http://www.frht.org.uk/

The Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust was set-up in 2007 to take over the remaining building of the former Ferryhill locomotive depot, restore it and transform the site into a working railway heritage site for the North East of Scotland. In this endeavor, the Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust has the active support of Aberdeen City Council and the Ferryhill Community Council. Some of the broad long

term aims or the trust are as follows:

To establish a working museum and centre for education showcasing the rich industrial past of Aberdeen and Shire, in a way that is engaging, active, and exciting, whilst preserving our cities history, so that it is not lost forever. To educate and inspire the engineers and designers of the future, though active participation and training in fundamental practical skills, and to engage young people in engineering and design activities. To provide a working base for the service of mainline steam locomotives, so that Aberdeen can become a destination for the many steam excursions run throughout the country today, which will provide a direct benefit to local and regional tourism and businesses. The Ferryhill Railway Heritage Trust is keen to support direct participation in its activities. Becoming a member of the Friends of Ferryhill Railway Trust creates that opportunity. Please contact Tamsin, our secretary at [email protected] for more information, post on our wall or PM us in messenger.

Unique opportunity at FRHT

08 Class Diesel Locomotive

The Ferryhill Heritage Railway Trust has determined that as part of the next stage of our development we should acquire a Shunter Locomotive to allow us to provide trips around the site, to move rolling stock around the site (and potentially to help Scotrail, LNER, and Caledonian Sleeper, in addition to visiting Steam Charters, move their rolling stock while at Ferryhill.) This will augment our Ruston diesel which will continue to fulfil lighter duties.

08 Class diesels are not cheap. Currently there are a few potentially available for sale to the Trust. To enable the trust to purchase one we are proposing the following arrangement which has some precedent at other heritage railways.

We propose to set up a conventional company limited by shares. There will be a limited number of shares, say 16 shares of £2,500 each (£40,000 should buy a good used engine). We would invite members and the public to buy shares. In parallel we would invite members and the public to donate to the Trust's separate 08 fund. When the Trust has raised enough funds, we would purchase a number of shares in the limited company. (Ideally 9 shares thus giving the Trust control of the loco, although this is not essential).

That way anyone wishing to own a share in a loco can do so and equally those who don't, but wish to help, can also do so.

We accept there is much to do to take this forward, but if you are interested in contributing please contact our Treasurer, in confidence, about the amount you would be interested in contributing.

Ferryhill will be servicing the locomotive hauling the GBXVIII steam charter on the evening of 23rd April. The locomotive will be either Black Five 44871 or 45407 and is expected to arrive at 21:15. The gates will be open from 9pm to 10pm. It will depart Ferryhill at 8:00 on Friday morning. There will be limited opportunities for visitors at these times. All visitors are requested to make themselves known to staff on arrival when they will be issued with a Hi-Viz vest, for which a cash deposit of £5 will be required which will be refunded on return of the vest. From our amazing volunteers and supporters to everyone who came along to visit – we really appreciate all your support. It was great to see so many people enjoying the experience and soaking up the beautiful sunshine.
We can’t wait to welcome you all back again soon!
Congratulations to the winners of the Easter Egg Hunt, hope you’ve picked up your prize. 😃
To all that completed our survey, many thanks for taking the time to do so. All feedback is being taken seriously and we will be reviewing everything carefully so we can learn, improve, and come back stronger next time. The survey will close at the end of the week so if you have not participated please do so before then.
