The gallery will have work of Paul Nicholas Fessler available during the Makers Market with plans to exhibit Pauls work as part of “Lets Dance” in the future. Paul has been making things out of clay and building kilns since his early teens. Now that he has retired, he can devote his energy to making sculpture. He remain fascinated with salt glaze and have started making woodfired pieces. Apart from the pose and aspect of the individual figures, he am interested in the spaces between the figures, the feeling and relationships that this evokes and the ‘connection’ that can be established with the beholder.

Please join us for Scottish Ceramics Gallery’s Makers Market Sunday 22nd 10-4 where Helena will be selling her work .A pilot event in partnership with Aberdeen City Council as part of their City Centre Events & Markets Grant Scheme. Helena will be exhibiting her work in the gallery for the first time during the Makers Market. Ceramics has always held a special place in her heart. She works primarily with stoneware, focusing on hand-building and slip casting techniques. Her pieces often feature neutral, earthy tones, blending sculptural and decorative elements into functional forms. Her inspiration draws from a combination of contemporary Scottish artists and the traditions and heritage of my Portuguese roots

Alastair Smith exhibited as part of “Norwegian Wood” at the Scottish Ceramics Gallery December 2024-January 2025.Alastair is a ceramicist based in Aberdeen, Scotland. Working primarily on the pottery wheel, he often experiments with alternative approaches to vessel-making, pushing the boundaries of traditional throwing techniques.

His practice explores the textures that emerge as clay is twisted, stretched, and transformed under stress. By applying intense surface heat in combination with slips and coarse reclaimed clay, Alastair explores the movement of moisture, producing layered, tactile surfaces. These become three-dimensional canvases for the application of natural colouring oxides and special-effect glazes after bisque firing. The glazes not only highlight the underlying textures but also introduce new layers of depth and complexity.

Alastair’s work is driven by a curiosity about surfaces in transition — from the weathered decay of the urban environment to the intricate patterns of the natural world.
Most of his pieces are fired in an electric kiln, though he has a growing interest in woodfiring and hopes to expand this aspect of his practice, embracing its atmospheric and unpredictable qualities.

Maria Muruga exhibited as part of ‘Class of 24 at the Scottish Ceramics Gallery September-October 2024.Her work is an honest interpretation of the human experience, captured through the tactile dialogue between clay and photography . Based in Aberdeen, she explores themes of identity, displacement, and the universal search for belonging.
By blending the slow, meditative process of ceramic design with visual storytelling, she creates pieces that serve as vessels for connection. Her practice is an invitation to look closer at our shared narratives finding beauty in our fragility and strength in our common ground.
“Art as a tool for connection, healing, and renewal.”
