We are delighted to welcome Fi Thomson into the studio as part of RSA Residencies for Scotland 2026.
Fi’s practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, and performance, rooted in a close and evolving relationship with landscape shaped by observation, memory, and lived experience. They use landscape as a narrative framework to explore themes of gender, equality, biodiversity, and storytelling, drawing viewers in through detailed mark-making and shifts in scale. The work reflects an ongoing awareness of moving through places shaped by those who have passed through them before.
“This residency is a significant opportunity to deepen and extend my practice, particularly in printmaking. Drawing, especially in pen and ink, has long been central to my process, with an enduring intention to translate these works into etchings. The dedicated time, space, and technical support offered by the residency allow me to focus on this transition, developing large-scale steel plates and testing how my drawn marks can be transformed through the etching process.
Through this period of concentrated making, I aim to push the scale and physicality of the work, exploring how the intimacy of drawing can expand into more immersive forms. The residency becomes both a site of production and a space for experimentation, enabling me to refine my mark-making while deepening the conceptual and material connections between landscape, process, and print.”
Born in Scotland, Fi studied Fine Art in the late 1980s, where their early interests in landscape, gender, and material processes began to take shape. They worked in studios across Europe before returning to Bristol in 1992, where they exhibited in local galleries. After periods living in London, Dublin, and Sunderland, they eventually settled in Aberdeenshire, where they raised two children. They have a studio in Huntly.
