Even when the mine was operational there was always a need to pump water out. Our mine shaft has a large original pump system still in place just un operational

Even on the hottest days of summer our mineshaft will drip water leading to a fantastic environment for frogs and newts to live

What lies beneath the surface...
Our Main Mine shaft through the decades! When visitors step onto our built-in platform today, they are standing hundreds of feet above the unseen depths below - a vertical shaft spanning 6 flooded mine levels and the top 7th (accessible) level.
⛏ 1791: The sinking of the main engine shaft begins. Twelve men work tirelessly to keep water at bay - entirely by hand (there were no waterwheels yet installed to pump out the water).
⛏ 1800s Mining Boom: At the height of production, a period known as the 'Mining Boom', the shaft reaches its deepest: expanding from from 3 levels (180ft deep) in 1861, to a whopping 7 levels / total of 432 feet / 132 metres from top to bottom, by 1875. There was no cage installed in this shaft - miners would have to climb the full height on ladders.
⛏1892: The mine closed and the shaft filled with water, subsequently standing abandoned for more than half a century.
⛏1973: by this point the mine had been used as a rubbish tip, with the waste being dumped into the top of the shaft. The site was miraculously turned into a Mining Museum and the site cleared of rubbish.
⛏ 1993: Access to see the shaft is provided to the public for the first time, viewing from the tunnel next to it.
⛏ 2021: We installed a platform so people, for the first time since the days of the miners, can once again stand within the shaft itself.
⛏ Today: Debris have cleared so the shaft is clearer than ever.
