Weaponry of a bygone era and the history of how small communities protected themselves from malevolent forces. Just a glimpse into the many displays and exhibits here Make the most of the last few weeks that we are open, before we take a break over Winter. We won’t be resting on our laurels though, as there is always lots of work to do keeping everything looking wonderful.

encourage our visitors to be nosy! There are hidden surprises in the Victorian School Room and if it takes your fancy, you can sit down and play a game of Totopoly. Fortunately the headmistress has long since retired, so you won’t be told off for playing games in the classroom 😉

Well! What a magical summer it's been here at Allerford Museum. We've met some awesome people, beautifully behaved dogs, delightful children and enjoyed a few frankly bizarre and entertaining conversations with some of our visitors along the way. What more could we ask for?

There's still time to visit us and engage in bizarre and entertaining conversations, if that's your thing, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 10 - 4 pm

Jars, bottles and a cooking range from bygone days. All will have been put to good use especially at this time of the year, when preserves, jams and chutneys were being made.

After the summer we've enjoyed here in Porlock Vale you may have forgotten where you stored your hot water bottles. In the late 1870's the ceramic hot water bottle (pictured) replaced the somewhat risky metal bed warmers, that had been in use since medieval times. Vulcanized rubber hot water bottles started to appear within a few years of the ceramic model, becoming the hot water bottle of choice by the turn of the 19th century. Who knew the humble hot water bottle had such an interesting product cycle.

Come and view our fine collection of ceramic hot water bottles plus much more here at Allerford Museum. Open Tues, Weds and Thurs between 10 - 4.

It's Friday Fish Day! To mark this we decided to conduct a none scientific straw pole here at Allerford Museum to find out, from a random selection of 7 people, who ate fish on a Friday. Here are the results:

2 people said YES, every week.
2 people said SOMETIMES. (once a month)
3 people said NO.

What has this go to do with Allerford Museum we hear you cry! Here's the connection: School dinners at Allerford School were introduced during the Second World War and fish was served on a Friday.
So, based on our straw pole we interpret the data to show that the children eating school dinners on a Friday at Allerford School in WW II 29% enjoyed Fish Friday, 29 % weren't bothered and 42% didn't like it. Interesting times.

Allerford Museum is open every Tues, Weds & Thurs 10 -4. See you soon.
