Members of the Upper Clatford History and Archaeological Group have been excavating the site of a pub that burnt down on 28th July 1888.
The New Inn was situated on land near the Pillhill Brook to the east of Sam White’s Hill. The road itself takes its name from the last innkeeper.
Recent research at the Hampshire Records Office has provided evidence that it was in existence in 1805 when a lease was granted to William Gilbert by the Lord of the Manor. The map of the Manor of Upper Clatford indicates that there was a building on the site in 1733. The archaeological research is based on a series of questions based on the historic data.
The excavation sought to find out, among other questions, which of the buildings was the New Inn and which were the residences; how many buildings could be identified; where was the fire started? could the buildings’ architecture and materials be identified?
The excavation is being directed by Kevin Holmes, a local archaeologist, and the project has generated a lot of interest in the village. Kevin commented
“Historic and archaeological research on this site has highlighted its importance in the infrastructure of the village which continues to this day. There are some puzzling bits about this excavation but that is what makes archaeology so interesting.”

Members of the public are invited to come to an Open Day on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May between 11.30am - 3pm.

The excavation has been generously funded with grants from Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire County Council and the Hampshire Field Club. The Upper Clatford History & Archaeological Group is grateful to Mr D C Li for permission to excavate on the land and to Upper Clatford Parish Council for their practical support.
