Some moments from Around Armadale over the past week…

1. We have been seeing more and more robins in the gardens recently, and gardener Angus managed to get this beautiful shot 🌱

2. The castle ruins in the golden sunlight - we are making the most of these mornings while we can 🌅

3. Some seasonal decorations going up in our giftshop 🍂

4. TLC in the walled garden by Rosemarie - keeping Armadale looking its best 🌺

5. Vincent the bull under house arrest after making a quick escape earlier in the week (with an even quicker capture!)

6. Another golden hour moment captured by our team ✨

See you next week for another instalment 📸

Ramsay’s Well 💧

There are plenty of stories hidden around Armadale - here is one of our favourites.

Hugh Ramsay was gardener here at Armadale, working from at least 1825–1832. According to local legend, he became rather fed up with the other gardeners spending too much time enjoying the refreshing water from the well instead of working, so he had it filled in!

That’s really all we know about the story. There’s nothing in the archives, maps or plans that tells us much more about the well itself, so we’re left with the legend and a few unanswered questions.

Was Hugh really responsible for filling it in? Were the gardeners spending too long having a drink and a chat? Or is there another story behind it?

Thank you to Linda, the Museum Manager, for this fun piece of history.

Around Armadale this week 🍂

1. The Virginia Creeper on the castle ruin is getting more vibrant by the day as we head further into autumn 🍁

2. It was lovely to see the Skye Terrier Club as they joined us at Armadale for their meeting and judging event. Fully embracing the rainy weather, they ended their afternoon with a photoshoot by the statue and new homecoming plaque.

3. The Stables welcomed Sleat and Strath Football Club for their awards night, followed by an evening of excellent music by Doc Livingstone in the bar.

4. Some early morning snaps of the cows up at the farm 🌅

5. Signs of autumn everywhere you look, even before you enter the gardens 🍂

See you next week for another instalment!
