Did you know that Mill St in Ashwell once looked like this?

A large brewery once occupied the site where Fordhams Close now sits, and where the Close gets its name - Fordhams Brewery. The brewery started as a farm brewery for the owners and workers but became very successful in its own right. At its peak in 1952, it had 91 pubs across the south east!

The brewery closed in 1965 and the site was demolished to make way for the current houses of Fordhams Close. A few of the brewery buildings still remain. See if you can spot them when you're next in the area....

For more stories about the brewery, take a look at our website: https://www.ashwellmuseum.org.uk/history/place-2/pubs/fordhams_ashwell_brewery

As promised, here is a post about Charlotte Morice (born 22 March 1810), the daughter of Rev. Henry Morice. Born in Essex, Charlotte moved to Ashwell at the age of two. Although little is known about the details of her life, she is remembered for two significant contributions: her artwork and the founding of the ‘New School’ (a girls' school) in 1842.

Charlotte was a talented artist, known for her striking silhouette portraits—one of which depicts her father—as well as detailed landscapes of Ashwell. Her work offers valuable insight into the people and places of the village during her time. Through her art, Charlotte also raised funds for the construction of Ratcliffe House, which then housed the New School.

Agriculture in Ashwell is a strong part of the village’s history and present, and this week’s object demonstrates this. The ‘Flail’, donated by Mr E O Fordham, was used c.1850 for threshing, which is the process of separating seeds from chaff. Ambrose Anderson, a cowman, was photographed demonstrating this, whilst working at Westbury Farm. Threshing included holding one part whilst hitting the grain that so ‘swipple’ (part of the flail) does the separating. The process preceded the thrashing machine and the Combine Harvester – a more familiar sight in the fields of Ashwell.
