There’s energy in Luci MacLaren’s Watch and Wait.

The golfer is caught completely absorbed in the moment, surrounded by Luci’s expressive layers of colour and loose, confident brushwork.

Rather than trying to describe every detail, the painting captures the movement and concentration of the game, flashes of blue, green, ochre and white coming together to give the whole surface a sense of life.

A great painting for anyone who loves golf, but equally strong simply as a beautifully expressive figurative work.

Jackie Henderson — Rose Cottage

Sometimes the smallest paintings have the most charm.

Jackie Henderson’s Rose Cottage is just 20 x 20 cm, but manages to create an entire little world within it.

A white cottage sits above a gently rounded hill scattered with soft pink roses, flanked by two simple trees and, if you look closely, a tiny black cat is waiting by the front door.

Full of Jackie’s unmistakable warmth and gentle humour, this is a lovely little painting that simply makes you feel good.

Peter Allan — For the Love of Fruit

There’s so much to enjoy in Peter Allan’s For the Love of Fruit.

At its centre is a simple arrangement of citrus fruit and a dark jug, but the longer you look, the more the painting begins to reveal itself — the geometric patterns, the typography, the cutting board, the knife and the large leafy plant all becoming part of a beautifully constructed composition.

Peter’s use of acrylic and collage gives the surface a wonderful richness, while those flashes of yellow and green provide just enough colour to bring the whole piece to life.

Gail Pope — White Magnolias

Quiet, elegant and beautifully considered.

Gail Pope’s White Magnolias pairs delicate white blooms with the strong sculptural form of the dark bowl beneath them. The restrained palette makes those flashes of white and soft pink all the more striking, while the wonderfully textured background gives the whole painting a lovely sense of depth.

There’s a real calmness to this piece, simple at first glance, but full of beautifully judged contrasts in shape, texture and tone.

There’s something wonderfully uplifting about Robert Kelsey’s Into the Light, Kildonan.

A winding road draws us gently through the landscape towards the whitewashed houses and the water beyond, while shafts of light begin to break through a beautifully atmospheric West Coast sky.

Robert has an extraordinary ability to capture the changing light of Scotland’s coast and islands, and this painting has that lovely sense of a moment caught between weather systems, the landscape still under heavy skies, but the light beginning to win through.

Two striking new works by Denise Findlay have arrived at Ballater Gallery.

There’s a wonderful sense of character and quiet narrative in Denise’s paintings, and these two new works are no exception.

Springer in the Rain immediately draws the eye with its vivid red coat, loose painterly surface and the familiar companionship of a walk in less-than-perfect weather, while On the dot has a quieter, more contemplative feel, with the figure, spaniel and clock creating a wonderfully balanced scene.

Both are painted in oil on panel and are now available at the gallery.

A Bridge Too Near by Stuart Luke Gatherer
Oil on canvas · 80 × 70 cm

Set indoors by warm lamplight, A Bridge Too Near is built around a carefully balanced triangular composition. The seated chess player anchors the foreground, while the standing figure gives the scene its vertical counterpoint. Even the framed paintings behind them become part of the composition, reinforcing the sense of a “game within a game.”

At the centre, the lamp acts as both a visual and narrative pivot. The exchanged glance between the two players introduces an immediate tension, while the standing figure remains harder to read- observer, rival, or something more personal?

The painting deliberately avoids giving us an answer. Its muted palette, warm light and psychological ambiguity invite the viewer to imagine the relationships between the figures for themselves. Even the chess position is significant: the pieces are arranged exactly as they were at a crucial stage of the famous Kasparov–Karpov match referenced by the title.
