Just finished working on this beautiful old oil on canvas.
As you can see, this remarkable portrait is already beginning to reveal its true character. Every restoration starts with patience, and proper cleaning is often the most important stage of the entire journey. Only once the surface is fully stabilised and cleaned working from “wrap to weft” can the delicate restoration work begin.

Years sometimes centuries, of accumulated dirt, smoke residue, aged varnish, and environmental contaminants can hide the original colours and detail. The cleaning process is never rushed. It requires hours of slow, methodical work, gently removing layers of grime millimetre by millimetre while constantly monitoring the paint surface beneath. I use a specially formulated conservation cleaner.

There’s something truly special about bringing history back to life — especially when it comes to art. This week, I had the pleasure of restoring a stunning Old Victorian painting. The painting had lost its sparkle — the surface was dulled by age, grime, and cracking varnish — but beneath it all lay a beautiful story waiting to be revealed once more.

I also carefully cleaned, restored, and lacquered the original frame, bringing back its rich luster and complementing the newly revived artwork perfectly.

During the cleaning process, I also repaired a bulge on the canvas, carefully bringing it back into shape to ensure the surface was smooth and stable again.

This oil on canvas painting came in last week for a much needed clean. After carefully lifting away years of dirt and grim, its soft, warm tones and delicate balance of light and shadow have been beautifully restored.

Every day is certainly different, in my studio. I received an email… asking could I repair this valuable watercolour. I am always up for a challenge, when it comes to restoring a painting!
I removed the foxing, on the watercolour painting and re-framed it. I even recognised the location it was painted from in Donegal.
