Causeway Coast & Glens Museum Services’ 2026 Summer Scheme - HISTORY HUNTERS
Join Museum Services for a summer exploring local history. We’re running four workshops for children who are in Years 6 – 8 in the current academic year (9 – 12 years). From ancient fossils to Mesolithic life to marauding Vikings to a glimpse of the American dream of Ulster emigrants.
Wednesday 22nd July – FOSSIL WALK at White Park Bay. Meeting in the carpark at 10am (parents are welcome to accompany children). We’ll walk the beach, learning about the rocks and pebbles, and you may even find a fossil!
Wednesday 29th July – MOUNTSANDEL: Where History Begins. Meeting at the lower gate (opposite the Courthouse) at 10am. Explore how Mesolithic man lived at Mountsandel nearly 10,000 years ago. How did he build his houses? What did he eat? (Parents are welcome to accompany children.)
Wednesday 5th August – VIKING VISITORS in Coleraine History Hub (in the Diamond Centre) at 10am. Discover all the places that may have been visited by the Vikings – from Cushendall to Castlerock. They even stopped by Coleraine!
Thursday 13th August – Bus Trip to the ULSTER AMERICAN FOLK PARK. Leaving Railway Place, Coleraine, at 9.30am and returning approximately 5pm. From Ulster to America – learn what life was like in 17th and 18th century Ulster, the cramped conditions onboard an emigrant ship to a new life in America.
All events are free; however, places are limited and booking is essential.

We are absolutely thrilled to be 1 of just 5 museums in the Best Small Museum category—and the only museum in Northern Ireland to make the shortlist!

This award is incredibly special because it is nominated and judged by families themselves. Our Museum Officer, Jamie Austin, said:
"We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who put us forward. Families are at the heart of everything we do. This achievement reflects the hard work of our team and volunteers in creating welcoming spaces, from our increased workshops and activity sheets to our newly refurbished children’s area inspired by our own museum day children’s book. We are so grateful for our community's fantastic support.”

What happens next?
Over the summer holidays, undercover family judges will visit us to see if we have what it takes to win! The final winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in October.

Make sure you stop by our stall at Armed Forces Day this Saturday, at Mall Street Car Park, Coleraine 😊

We will be joined by wonderful art facilitator Meraki Art NI from 1pm to 3pm and kiddos will get a chance to make their very own medals to take home 🎖⭐we will also have wartime items, handling objects, photos and more on display! So make sure to come and say hello!

Our USA 250: Showbusiness, Culture and Causeway Coast exhibition at Coleraine Town Hall will be temporarily closed on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th June for Armed Forces Day.

The exhibition will re-open on Tuesday 23rd June as normal.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council are currently looking for a seasonal Museum Attendant to join their team primarly based in Ballymoney with occassional travel to Ballycastle.

We had a lovely morning with Carrowreagh Primary School, Ballymoney exploring our USA 250: Showbusiness, Culture and the Causeway Coast exhibition at Coleraine Town Hall. We were very impressed with all the movie posters and record cover designs, some truly funky designs! 🎬🎼🎸
