On display in the Leeds Fine Artists x Cannon Hall exhibition at Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens

Roger says:

"Based on the ‘Cheiron and Achilleus Charger’ by William de Morgan.

Some while ago, I made a painting in response to a Patrick Caulfield print in Leeds University’s Collection. The print showed a stack of plates and my painting had a single plate. This led me later to painting actual plates fixed to panels.

When I looked at the De Morgan Collection again I was drawn to the Charger.
The story of Sagittarius and Achilles is fascinating"

Blog of the week: Conserving the History of Cannon Hall Museum

This document is a pardon for John Spencer (d.1681) of Cannon Hall who stabbed Edward Dison with a rapier on 11 June 1661. Edward died three days later. The document is written in Latin and was signed by King Charles II on 24 January 1662 following a lengthy legal process.

With help from the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust and Barnsley Museums & Heritage Trust this year the document was conserved and displayed for the first time.

Today is National Chess Day

A ceramic chess piece in the form of a castle with a knight standing on the parapet. The whole is finished in a cream glaze. The Martin Brothers were well known for making very quirky items from ceramic.
