Happy 69th birthday to us! 🥳🎂 Cannon Hall opened as a museum in 1957

Officially opened by by the Earl of Scarborough, Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding who said:

"Cannon Hall in its new role would be a big asset to the people of the Barnsley area and a peaceful refuge from the industrialism of the present age. He congratulated the local authority on their foresight"

Jonas Beaumont by Abel Hold on loan from Cawthorne Victoria Jubilee Museum

He was the estate carpenter for the Cannon Hall Estate. He and his wife lived at North Lodge on the Cannon Hall Estate. By 1851 Jonas was receiving an annuity rather being employed. This is likely to have been paid by John Spencer Stanhope and was similar to a pension.

This portrait features in our new exhibition. Learn more about Abel Hold in a display at Cawthorne Museum which is open Sat-Sun 2pm-5pm

We hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine today! ☀

You might have seen some recent reports about concern for an injured goose within our Park and Gardens. Rest assured, we are aware of this and onsite staff have tried helping the goose but it keeps flying away.

We have contacted the RSPCA and await their assistance with this matter.

Our Museum, Gardens and car park remain open as normal.

This tile is most likely to date from what is referred to as the 'Early Fulham Period' which is when De Morgan's pottery was first moved to Fulham, London

Did you know..... In the 13th century a building was owned on the site of Cannon Hall by Gilbert Canun.

It is thought he was inspired by the name 'Cannon Hall' at the time as there was also nearby 'Cannon Grove Wood' which fueled local iron smelting in the early 1300s

Learn about the history of the hall and the family who lived here in our new exhibition. Head to our website where you can read blogs and see more of our collections.
