It is with deep sadness that I have to announce the passing of our wonderful member Peter Holmberg.

He passed away peacefully last Friday 22nd at home surrounded by his 3 children after a brave battle with cancer.

He was a member of Eastgate Art Gallery for over 12 years and only recently was Artist of the Month and had his photo taken on 1st May which, unfortunately, was the last time he came to the gallery.

I (Martin) personally had the pleasure of knowing Peter for the last 4 years and was on shift with him every Friday morning here at the Gallery. I will miss our chats about Art and also putting the world to rights. He will be solely missed and sending love to his family and friends whom have agreed to me writing this tribute.

This months featured artist of the month is Peter Holmberg

Peter has been a member of the Eastgate Art Gallery for over 12 years.

Peter had no experience in drawing or painting and decided to take evening classes after a year of retirement , of which he has now been, for over 20 years. When the night classes finished, Peter then moved into Laindon Art Group on Monday mornings. He has now continued to paint as well as continuing his hobby and love of gardening.

He does prefer to paint in oils with an acrylic under painting although he still continues with pencil drawings and occasionally water colours too. He’s used various mediums for his artwork including canvas, glass jars and paper to name a few.

Peter mainly does paint in landscape though recently has started producing imaginative pieces.

His artwork has been displayed in Basildon Library, Basildon Hospital and has even been published in the local press.

Why not pop down and see Peter's awesome artwork along with our other Artists work on display?

Yess!!!! Our Artist of the Month is back

This month's featured Artist of the month is Leroy Benn, he gained a certificate in O Level Art.

In 2004 he attended the SAA (The Society for all Artists) held in a Business and Design Centre in York Street London. It features professional artists throughout the UK, each with their unique style/ specialism, giving demonstrations on a wide range of mediums used in art. It allowed artists to mingle, learn and develop new techniques. Leroy participated in workshops, group activities and discussions on the day, there were also other event which participants were involved in, including videos etc.

Leroy has benefitted from these workshops and acquired a greater understanding of composition. colour, depth, perspective, shadows, reflections, dimensions etc. It has given him vision and enabled him to re-discover a passion and to focus on his creative skills for abstract art, landscape, contemporary, portraits. The following year he began to do art and tries to give his art work a lot of detail.

In 2011 He was invited by Eastgate Art Gallery to display some art work. He was delighted. Art is just a hobby for him. It enables him to relax especially at weekends, after working hard during the week. It motivates him to be more creative.

In January 2015 he was pleased to be a part of all the artists' invited displayed one piece of art in the House of Commons at the invitation of John Baron MP who had visited the gallery and took pictures with all the artists.

Leroy works from his studio at home in a calm environment, playing soft background Classical music, this creates a good working atmosphere. It is relaxing and enables him to stay focused. He uses acrylics, but also tried stencils, ink and charcoal in the past.

Art has therapeutic / rehab values, it allows him to do something useful.

This month's featured Artist of the month is Stan Hall.

Stan is a new member of our gallery, he is 48 and has always been creating artwork since the age of 14 where he started his love for art at school and college.

His style has changed a lot over the years, at the moment he is focusing on crosses and angel wings, which is his new found style. He's called his artwork "Faith by Stan Hall" the main painting pictured next to Stan is called "Faith (an Angels faith).

He now works with paper and card creating beautiful 3d images and has been working on this style for a year. He is now looking to build on this style, with his new found faith and has become humble at the same time, which he believes is reflected in his artwork.

This month's featured Artist of the month is Matt Leighton.

Matt has been drawing on and off since childhood but has only been seriously putting himself out there for the last 12 years with encouragement from friends.

He is completely self taught with his main inspirations being fantasy films/TV shows/video games, tattoo art and more traditional art such as portraiture. He works predominantly in graphite pencil as well as watercolour pencils with his main themes being fantasy and tattoo inspired Japanese art.

Matt has been involved with our gallery for 11 years, selling many pieces during that time. He is open to commissions.

This month's featured Artist of the month is Anthony Marriage.

Anthony has been drawing for as long as he can remember. It all began with cartoons and comic-style illustrations, and over the years his practice evolved into fine art. That journey led him to study and achieve a degree in Fine Art, where he developed his skills across a variety of mediums and techniques.

He works mainly in acrylics and oils, but enjoys experimenting with different materials depending on the subject matter. More recently, he has been exploring digital portraiture, creating expressive drawings of well-known actors. Whether he is painting traditionally or drawing digitally, his aim is to capture not just their likeness but a sense of their inner life and essence that makes them memorable.

Anthony is an active member of the Bas Arts Index, where he volunteers regularly, attend meetings, takes part in creative workshops, and engages with an enthusiastic community of local artists. Art has always been a central part of his life—it helps him connect with others, stay grounded, and continue growing both creatively and personally.
