Battle has always had a spark for celebration quite literally! 💥

Back in 1676, John Hammond built a powder mill on Abbey land, and before long Battle was known for making “the finest gunpowder, perhaps the best in Europe.” Our gunpowder supplied the British Army right up to the Crimean War!

The mills flourished until 1874, when explosions brought the fiery industry to a close. But the spirit of Battle never faded it just moved from the mills to the bonfires! 🔥

Every year, the town celebrates with processions, fireworks, and the famous burning of the ‘Guy’ and we even have the head of an antique effigy in the Museum that’s over 150 years old!

✨ Battel Bonfire Night is next Saturday, so the countdown is officially on!

After a 2 week break (short holiday and family visitors) stitching of the La Mora Tapestry resumes on Friday at 1pm to 5 pm and on Saturday 10am to 2pn in Battle library. In the meantime Tina has tidied up the first section (1.5m long) and moved the tapestry on for the next section to be stitched. Attached is a photo of the first part before it was detached from the stitching frame today.
Although I'm biased I think that it's looking pretty good and Tina is very thankful to all those who have already contributed. She is building up a great community of stitchers with many friendships made.
So do come along and add your stitches to this historic project in Battle!!

This coming Sunday, 12th January 2025, the Battle and District Historical Society will again be exhibiting at the New Year New You event to be held in Battle Memorial Hall from 10.00-12.00. Come and find out about our Society, lecture program and the opportunity to buy books written by our members. And come and join the Society for access to our monthly lecture program, buying our books at discount prices and meeting others with an interest in history.
