Twinwood Aviation Museum

Twinwood Aviation Museum Aviation museum covering the second World War and World War 1 with displays on the RAF and 8th USAAF along with the Home Front.

We have several engines recovered from aircraft crash sites along with their unique and often poignant story's. Located on the former World War 11, Royal Air Force Night Fighter training station
RAF Twinwood Farm, now the home of the Glenn Miller Museum and annual festival of Jazz and Swing held every August Bank Holiday weekend. The Twinwood Aviation Museum is housed in the original Flight Office

building, thanks to the generosity of Mr. David Wooding and Twinwood Events Ltd. The museum is funded and maintained solely by volunteers who are aviation enthusiasts and dedicated to the cause of preserving our aviation heritage for future generations. The museum was founded in January 2002, but the members have many years experience in the field of aviation archaeology and research. The main activity of the museum involves the research, location and when feasible recovery of crashed military aircraft of historical importance from the Second World War. The history of each aircraft is researched via U.S. Air Force and Air Ministry documents and reports from which an account and often poignant story of the aircraft and crew may be built up. On the location of a crash site and after obtaining permission from the land owner and a licence from the Ministry of Defence (A legal requirement under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986) We are then able to locate with the aid of sophisticated metal detectors any remains of the aircraft and then excavate the site. Through the exhibition of such items we aim to create a museum of interest for all ages which can not only be entertaining but educational. We also aim to preserve the memory of those who fought and flew in these aircraft during the war, and to remember the thousands who made the supreme sacrifice by giving their lives to secure our freedom. It is also our aim to illustrate the work of the groundcrews who worked in all weather conditions to prepare arm and maintain the aircraft providing the necessary equipment to ensure victory.

Our Insect Safari event on Sunday was a resounding success, with numerous "Bug Hunters' participating and discovering the fascinating world of insects surrounding our museum facilities. This distinctive event was made possible through the expertise of Tim Newton, entomologist, and his assistant Kary, who guided young explorers through an immersive experience of insect identification, involving specimen collection and microscopic examination.
We appreciate the enthusiastic response from our visitors and extend our gratitude for their support of this event.

On Bank Holiday Monday, the Spitfire Restoration Team, comprising Neil, Nigel, Colin, and Les, commenced work on the restoration of the large-scale Spitfire VB with utmost diligence. The team decided to initiate the process with the wings, which involved meticulous sanding, cutting and filling. Notably, the wings feature a substantial metal former inside, and since the aircraft will be displayed on its wheels, a section in the centre of the wings was carefully cut away to determine the optimal attachment points for the undercarriage legs to the framework.
