Tomorrow Late Night Art Belfast

Late Night Art May is this Thursday the 7th. Join us on the Art Gallery Walking Tour to visit many new art exhibitions including Michelle Williams Gamaker's 'Strange Evidence' at The Mac.
Williams Gamaker revisits the life of Merle Oberon to expose the racial politics of early cinema and examines how Oberon’s mixed heritage was erased under the pressures of Hollywood’s racial hierarchies.

Strange Evidence is a genre bending Body Horror/Film Noir, focusing on 1930s screen star and Academy Award nominee Merle Oberon, who kept her mixed Sri Lankan, Indian and British heritage secret to protect her industry status, passing as white until her death in 1979. Under the guardianship of Alexander Korda’s London Films, as a contracted star she became its resident so-called “exotic” playing stereotypical roles.

Together with the Studios, Merle falsified her past claiming she was born in Tasmania to British parents. She also controlled how she was photographed, relying on make-up, lighting, dermabrasion and skin-bleaching procedures, which caused cosmetic poisoning and allergic reactions.

Williams Gamaker’s project sensitively approaches Oberon’s story, exploring self-censorship, racial stigma and trauma, looking with nuance at complex decisions shaped by racial prejudice and restrictive conditions of labour, which still impact screen artists today.

During this exhibition the gallery will become a hybrid installation/working film studio, with the set of this new film serving as the focal point of the exhibition.

All welcome on the tour, message me for more info. Tour starts at 7pm Thursday May 7th from the front steps of Saint Anne's Cathedral.

Lots to see during March Late Night Art Belfast . The tour walked first to the Art Gallery in the new University of Ulster building on York St, for a beautiful exhibition of paintings 'Shapes of Change' by father and son painters Joseph McWilliams (1938-2015) and Simon McWilliams.
Onwards to CRAFT NI Gallery on Royal Avenue to view work by many local artists as well as a solo exhibition by Sarah Cathers 'Material Alchemy'.
Along the street to University of Atypical for Arts and Disability where we saw Paul Moore's installation 'Intangible Bodies'. Around the corner onto Lower North Street and into The Engine Room Gallery for their Winter Group Show. Belfast Exposed Photography Gallery on Lower Donegall St was our next stop for an exhibition of photography by Trisha Morrissey and Peter Richards. In the packed Beanbag Cinema at the back of the gallery, Belfast Film Festival were screening 'At The Seams' a programme of moving image work by women, in celebration of International Womens Day. Strolling on we arrived at the Belfast Print Workshop on Waring Street to see a show by Hannah McMurray, as well as many prints for sale by the various artists who belong to the workshop. Lastly at five minutes to nine we crossed the street and into The Merchant Hotel for a look at some paintings by various artists in the Gormleys Gallery space.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the walking tour. The next one will be on the first Thursday in April. Hopefully see you there.
