🗣️‘From South Africa to Palestine: Lessons from the Dunnes Stores Strike’ With Karen Gearon

📆 Wednesday 10th June, 7pm
📍 Áras Uí Chonghaile

In the 1980’s, Dunnes Stores workers in Ireland made history by striking against handling South African goods under apartheid. This discussion revisits their courageous stand, explores the power of boycott as a tool of solidarity, and considers its relevance today in movements like BDS and the struggle for Palestine.

Karen Gearon is a community worker and former Dunnes Stores employee, best known as one the shop stewards who led the 1984-87 anti-apartheid strike at Dunnes’ Henry Street branch in Dublin.

Great to listen to Angus Mitchell in Áras Uí Chonghaile this evening discussing the life and radical transformation of Roger Casement.

Fascinating insights into how a man once celebrated by the British establishment for exposing atrocities in Africa and South America came to reject empire and embrace Irish revolution, and how efforts to distort and confuse his legacy continue to shape public understanding today.

🗣️ ‘The Struggle for Republican Memory: Roger Casement and the Politics of Irish History’ with Angus Mitchell

📆 Thursday 28th May, 7pm
📍 Áras Uí Chonghaile

How did a man lauded by the British Government for exposing atrocities in Africa and South America come to reject the empire entirely and embrace the ethos of Irish revolution?

This lecture traces the radical transformation of Roger Casement and examines how the state ruthlessly deployed manipulation and historical cover-up to confuse and distort his legacy - a pattern that continues to shape public understanding of his life.
