Northern Ireland War Memorial Discover Northern Ireland during the Second World War

Situated in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast we welcome visitors from around the world with a permanent exhibition recalling the Belfast Blitz of 1941, and the presence of US forces from 1942 – 1944. The fallen are remembered in a magnificent stained glass window and granite plinth containing Books of Remembrance from both world wars.

This National Drawing Day, we’re sharing drawings from the Northern Ireland War Memorial collection and inviting you to create your own. ✏️

These remind us that drawing in wartime was not only about art. It could be practical, humorous, personal, or emotional. A drawing might explain a piece of equipment, capture a scene from daily life, or simply offer a moment of creativity in difficult times.

Together, they show the many ways people used drawing to observe, communicate, remember, and express themselves during the Second World War. Drawing helped people record not just war, but everyday life within it. 🪖🖌️

‘Children of the Blitz’ airs tonight at 9pm on BBC2 which features some of the last people who witnessed the reality of the Blitz, with their testimony offering an intimate, enlightening and moving portrait of wartime United Kingdom through children’s eyes. These eyewitnesses include two NIWM War & Me Interviewees, Doreen McBride and the late Patsy Moneypenny, who lived in Belfast in 1941 and were deeply affected by their experiences of the air raids.

The Northern Ireland War Memorial was happy to be able to help Minnow Films ensure the experiences of the Belfast Blitz were included in 'Children of the Blitz' by introducing them to Patsy & Doreen.
