What better way to mark Global Accessibility Awareness Day than to announce the Millennium Forum as the first recipient of our Accessibility Champion award!
Millennium Forum has been working with us over the past 3 years on our Arts and Disability Access Awards. On this programme, one of our Access Advisors works together with an organisation to identify and remove barriers that exist for Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent audience members, artists, volunteers, and staff. Organisations who improve across 3 years receive Accessibility Champion status for their dedication and excellent work.

Our Access and Inclusion Manager Jonathan was struck by how access is embedded throughout the Millennium Forum: every staff member and volunteer thinks of this as simply part of what they do. Congratulations to everyone, and in particular to Box Office & Access Manager Lisa Heaney, and the Forum’s Access to Arts for All advisory group.

We also must thank Access Advisor Alex Cregan for his thoughtful and meticulous work. Huge thanks as well to Red Earth Designs for making our beautiful award.

Accessibility Champion status also recognises the Millennium Forum as a guiding light for other organisations. We’ll be sharing some of what they do in future posts.

University of Atypical were delighted to support the Bank of Ideas voting day on Sunday. Staff members Louise Carey and Jonathan Mitchell were on hand to handle any accessibility requests.

Bank of Ideas is a fantastic Belfast City Council project which encourages people and organisations to come up with creative events to bring to their local communities.

The voting day allowed the public to learn about the ideas and pick their favourites. Successful ideas will receive council funding so that they can implement their project.

This year saw a lot of ideas for the Fleadh Cheoil, which comes to Belfast from 2 to 9 August 2026.

It was a great day with a brilliant turnout. We’re glad to have played a role in its success.

Look out for announcements of winners from the Culture Belfast team.

These are some of our favourite quotes from True Biz by Sara Nović, which we are reading for our May Atypical Book Club. The quotes capture the importance of language in relation to oppression and marginalisation. Denying people language - like when oralism prevents Deaf people learning and using sign language - can deny their ability to express or even name the causes of harm and oppression. Being able to communicate in your natural language is a human right. Without it marginalised communities are left oppressed and isolated. Charlie’s awakening to this in True Biz is one of the book’s key themes, and we’re looking forward to discussing it.

The time is getting close for our Atypical Book Club, however there is still time to sign up. Even if you don’t get the book finished, we want to hear your thoughts about the themes. Everyone is welcome and we will have a BSL interpreter on the evening.

Atypical Book Club is on Wednesday 20 May, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in the Ledger Studio Belfast. You can find more information, and book a place to tell us your access requirements, through the link below

University of Atypical has awarded £1,000 grants through the Atypical Generation Fund to 20 D/deaf, disabled and neurodivergent artists to develop their creative practice. The National Lottery funding has been delivered on behalf of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Edel Murphy, CEO and Artistic Director, University of Atypical, said: “While it has a new name, these grants have been a long-standing support for individual artists who are Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent to support their careers. There is a wealth of talent coming through this fund and while the grants are modest, the awards have an incredible impact on the artists. This fund is an important route for disabled artists to play an active role in the creative sector of Northern Ireland.”

Patricia Lavery, Head of Community Arts and Education, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, commented: “Congratulations to the 20 artists who have been awarded funding. I sincerely hope this goes some way to help you be empowered to fulfil your creative ambition and achieve your full potential in the pursuit of artistic excellence. Ensuring that all audiences can, in their turn, enjoy equitable access to these proposed enriching arts experiences. I wish you all the very best in this next step in your creative journey and can’t wait to see the outcomes in the year ahead.”
