YouTube: The Vale of Berkeley Railway is a new initiative to build a heritage railway based at Sharpness and to run trains eventually along the whole length of the Severn & Wye Railway branch to the site of Berkeley Road station. It has NO Connection with any p

revious schemes to do this). The first aim is to establish a comprehensive rail engineering facility based in the old diesel shed next to Sharpness dry dock. From there it will bring back into operation the dock lines and provide brake van rides around the dock area. As soon as possible, temporary facilities will be provided to allow the VoBR to run steam heritage trains between Sharpness and Berkeley. Then, plans will be produced to rebuild as authentically as possible the stations at both Sharpness and Berkeley. Other developments for the future include a museum, locomotive maintenance facilities and other workshop space close to Sharpness station.

The big sleeper marathon starts tomorrow!

We are going to replace 30 rotten sleepers with new just outside our southern fence. We hope the whole lot can be done in 3 days which is a big ask but we have a great team raring to go.

If you’d like to help just turn up and ask for Pamela or Edgar. Strong boots and gloves are a must though!

Down at Oldminster Sidings there's a lot of focus on the Pacer set. Every week it looks better and works better. All it needs now is the chance to stretch its legs... 🙂.

Does anyone know of a vintage bus that might be available on the weekend of 31 July - 2 August?

Delivered today. This is a Midland Railway box van body of the kind that would have been seen frequently around Sharpness Docks 100 years ago (that’s how old it is!).

It is in pretty good condition considering its age but needs new wheels, buffers and general renovation of the woodwork to bring it back to life.

The woodwork department will be getting to work on it as soon as they have completed their new facilities and anyone who would like to help restore old vehicles like this are more than welcome to come and join us.

The only qualification is enjoying working with wood and an interest in learning new skills.

Good progress today drilling holes in sleepers!

P...p...perk up a Pacer! More work is being devoted to ensuring the Pacer is in peak condition – yet there's still plenty to do and you could help! Skilled or unskilled but enthusiastic, we'd welcome you down at Oldminster Sidings, Sharpness.

Stroud council is encouraging community groups, schools etc to take part in ‘No Mow May’. This is because the flowers etc that emerge in May are very important to pollination for bees, birds etc.

We should try to support this which will mean waiting until the month is over before strimming and mowing.

What we mow after May then needs to be removed so that it doesn’t mulch down into the soil because we will be expected to maintain an environment that grows naturally on our site. This is a requirement that will be built into our Habitat Management Plan, which we are expected to submit to the council as part of the conditions for planning permission for the shed.

We should probably make a start by building an area for composting.
