🎉News on the funding for The Living Barracks at Berwick Barracks

We’re delighted to announce that The National Lottery Heritage Fund have awarded a £4.5m grant to English Heritage on behalf of the Berwick Barracks Partnership for the Living Barracks Project. Planning permission has also been secured.

The Heritage Fund grant will go towards the conservation and refurbishment of the East Barracks Block, where the existing KOSB museum sits. New gallery spaces will be created to house Berwick’s important Burrell Collection, the KOSB Museum and other town collections.

The funding will also support a programme of community outreach and collections care. Follow this page for regular updates on the project, and see how you can get involved.

Lowry found great inspiration in Berwick, and he regularly holidayed in the town.

We have two paintings by L.S. Lowry on display at Berwick Museum and Art Gallery.

Beach Scene c1960

Spittal, on the opposite side of the river to Berwick, was a favoured walking place for Lowry, who probably reached it by travelling on the ferry across the estuary. The painting shows the ebb and flow of a crowd of holidaymakers – and a little black dog – on the beach.

Old Berwick, 1936

Full of character and charm, “Old Berwick”, painted in 1936, is one of Lowry’s finest portrayals of Berwick-upon-Tweed, a town that held considerable personal and artistic significance for the artist.

Come and find out more about the artist and his love of Berwick.

The museum is open from 10am - 4pm until Sunday 3rd November, and will then close for the winter.

Admission is £5 adults, £4 concessions and kids visit for FREE. Admission is also free for English Heritage members.

We are delighted to display the Ord Cross at Berwick Museum and Art Gallery where you can find out all about this unique object, reading the runes and Christianity in the 7th century kingdom of Northumbria.

The museum is open from 10am - 4pm until Sunday 3rd November, and will then close for the winter.

If you are on half term holidays this week come and join in the spooky halloween activities.

Have a go at the Berwick Bat Trail - Pick up your trail sheet at the museum Welcome Desk then explore the museum to try and find all the bats.

Count how many you can find and make your way back to the Welcome Desk with your completed trail sheet. If you’ve spotted them all then you’ll be rewarded with a small sweet treat!

The Berwick Bat Trail is inspired by the story of the Berwick Vampire. Brave visitors can ask museum staff about this terrifying tale. (Less brave visitors can just enjoy spotting the bats!)

You can also have a go at creating your own unique Halloween decoration to take home.

Activities are included with your admission where kids visit for FREE!
