The Calf Street Pottery

The Calf Street Pottery I'm generally open from 10 until 17.30 most weekdays and 10 am until 1pm on Saturday. Please phone ahead if making a special visit.

For more than 10 years I worked in Hartland Pottery learning my craft under Clive Pearson. After a 9 year break to bring up the family, I opened the No. 39 Pottery in the centre of the village of Hartland. Using stoneware clay I'm producing a range of decorated domestic ware, experimenting with form and function using coloured slips and simple sgraffito designs inspired by the surrounding envir

onment of this beautiful part Devon. In November 2012 I won the craft section of the Back Room Creatives competition in the Journal 2. In December 2019 I relocated to the Calf Street pottery at 37 Fore Street. It took us four long years to build ourselves this new pottery and house but we finally moved into the house in July 2020.

There's a saying about a stich in time saves nine. Well, I was supposed to put new elements in the kiln in March. I didn't, and the last firing burnt out one element. I'm waiting for the clever kiln people to wind me some more as I watch my drying wrack fill up. I wonder if I will learn from this lesson 🤔 😕?

There we go, it is possible to catch a bus from Hartland and get to Portofino on public transport. It was a long journey home, but with breakfast in Milan, lunch in Zurich, and dinner in Paris, it all seemed very civilised. Felt a bit harder on the UK side, where we got back at 11pm to a tube strike. Luckily, we did manage to catch our bus to Exeter. It would have been great if the first train into Barnstaple met a connecting bus to Hartland. However, what's 2 1/2 hours in cafes when finally the 319 brings you back home again.
And the dress, well, that will have to wait a while before its next adventure.

After one more train ride, a 'relaxing, luxury'bus journey, the dress got to Portofino!!! And what a place, just absolutely beautiful. I even treated the dress to a coffee. Who knew that a brief question to Google would lead to this adventure.

Bonjorno, we made it,and what a journey. Talk about Race Across the World, we found Race Across the Stations adrenaline fuelled enough. Finding the right tickets, the right Metro, and the right platform in a hurry. But, oh, so worth it. The scenery through the Alps was spectacular. Also travelling on the train you get to meet some lovely people and the staff along the way were do helpful. We arrived in Genoa at 9.45pm, where we are staying. The dress is out of the case and hanging up ready for its trip to Portofino tomorrow!!

We caught the Barnstaple train via Exeter onto dear old Paddington station, and what a splendid building it is. We had a nice stopover in King's Cross. After a fine curry, we went to the King Charles pub and spied one of the vases I made for them a few years ago.
It's an early start at St. Pancras, where you find two old farts negotiating this, find your ticket on your phone thing. Next stop Paris. Bonjour!!

It all started with a dress that Steve bought for me Christmas 2024. I thought it would be just the dress to wear in Portofino. When trying to find out where that was, Google showed us that if we caught the 319 bus from Hartland, we could get to Portofino, which is in Northen Italy the next day by bus and train. Fast forward a year and 4 months later, and we are off, suitcases in hand, oh, and the dress!! Lilian Threlkeld is kindly opening the shop and looking after Earl, the cat. I will try to keep you all posted on our ' Race Across Europe '.
