Story tiles workshop with Jam Westwood 💫

Shut out the noise of the outside world and tune into your soul! Under the instruction of experienced educator and ceramicist Jam Westwood, learn how to make a piece of personalised clay tile art with explorative decoration - preserving a little piece of your ‘inside world’, forever! With a focus on words, stories numbers and symbols which directly link to you, you will create a tile which is a truly personal and unique work of art.

Over the half day session you will learn how to handle and roll clay tiles, how to sgraffito and print onto clay surfaces with slips and underglazes and how to fix 3D features to your 12x12 ceramic tile design. All tiles will be glazed and fired.

Artist talk this Sunday!

Don't miss Edie Evans in conversation with ceramics researcher, curator and artist Clare Twomey for a fascinating talk exploring Evans’ recent ceramics residency at The Burton.

Edie's residency investigated the region’s clay landscapes, drawing on research undertaken in dialogue with the RJ Lloyd Collection to explore the material histories of North Devon.

Clare Twomey is a British artist, researcher, and curator. Her practice encompasses site-specific installation and performance; she frequently collaborates with institutions, and embraces audience participation and temporality.

Let's Clay! is open from today!

Our galleries are now a drop in ceramics studio, open to all! Step inside and get inspired, make your hopes in clay and learn about the clay recycling process.

This exhibition is led by artists Joanne Masding and Sarah Silverwood from ceramics co-operative Modern Clay. It forms part of our 75th anniversary celebrations where we are exploring our hopes and dreams for the future and what the next 75 years might look like for The Burton.

Let's Clay! is only on for 3 weeks until the 7 November so don't miss out!

Tile Decorating workshop with Taz Pollard

Come and explore a variety of techniques used to decorate red earthenware tiles. Using The Burton's collection as inspiration, you will get an understanding of local, traditional methods using white slip, to more contemporary ideas and expression. You will have the chance to practice various techniques and experiment before applying them to a finished set of tiles. All tiles will be fired and glazed.

Calling all schools, community groups and home education groups! 💫

During 'Let's Clay!', we will have a dedicated space for groups to hold self-led workshops with clay. It’s a brilliant opportunity to explore creativity, learning and hands-on making whilst connecting to Northern Devon's rich ceramics heritage.

Teachers and group leaders will be required to attend a session with Modern Clay on Tuesday 13 October, from 5pm - 7pm to introduce how to use this space.
