New trustees ✨

We are delighted to welcome five new Trustees to The Burton at an exciting time in our journey as we celebrate our 75th anniversary year. Each of them bring a wealth of experience, fresh perspectives, and a strong commitment to the work we do at The Burton, and we look forward to the influence that they will have on shaping the continued growth and development of the gallery.

Our Trustees are volunteers who generously give their time to help provide governance for the charity, also known as Board Members or the Board. They play a vital role in shaping its direction, making decisions about how the organisation is run, and ensuring it has the resources and policies needed to meet its legal and strategic responsibilities.

Our new Trustees are Hannah Nash, Claire Clutterbuck, Bryony Robins, Ben Lyon-Ross and Liz Green who are joining existing Board members Robert Millward (Chair), Robert Woolley (Vice Chair), Ben Liddell, Ian Huggett, Nick Beer, Sarah Lawrence and Sam Astill.

Craft Showcase artist Teresa Dunne 🌷

Teresa Dunne develops wool and silk, and linen scarves inspired by the light and colour of her clifftop adventures. Spiralling thermals, sea mizzle, soaring birds and unfurling flora are made material with yarns sourced, dyed and spun by a family-run mill in West Yorkshire. From her loom, soft fabric emerges with rhythms of colour and pattern that envelop the wearer in the ebb and flow of their making. Cornish titles, like Molgh Dhu (Black Bird) and Atal Mor (Flotsam and Jetsam), echo perpetual coasts and endless skies.

Teresa's beautifully woven scarves are on display in our Craft Showcase: Earthly Pleasures, on until 28 June.

Meet the collectors: Alan Edward (Ed), collector of 80s hip-hop memorabilia...

"I was a kid of the 1980s, and have been collecting Hip Hop and Electro records since 1985, but the introduction of Hip Hop and the invention of Electro in the UK wasn't always smooth sailing. Beyond the handful of Hip Hop tunes that cracked the Top 40, rap on vinyl was hard to find unless you knew which inner city record shops stocked imported 12-inches. It was an interest my friends and I mostly explored via word-of-mouth recommendations, and through hand cutting cassette tapes for each other. Humming half remembered songs from the radio to the staff of our local record shop got us the newest tracks if we were lucky and if no one else had got there first; the owner had an encyclopedic memory for records and songs, but limited stock.

I first fell in love with Rap when I saw Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick & The Get Fresh Crew perform their legendary song 'The Show' on BBC's Top of the Pops. My life-long connection to early Hip Hop has led to an interest in Black music, and learning about Black History and Culture in the UK and USA. From this interest I've amassed a collection of 4000+ vinyl Hip Hop singles and albums, with a particular focus on those that were released between 1979-1991."

You can come and see Ed's collection at our current exhibition, 'What We Keep: The Art of Collecting" open until 19 July.

Craft Showcase artist ✨

Zaleika Bratchley creates elegant, statement jewellery in recycled silver and brass that playfully engages the wearer through movement, colour and texture. Her beaten, striated, or polished surfaces often recall ripples, cleaved rock, or dawn rays, contrasting with their bold architectural curves or uncompromising geometric forms. These contradictions found in her work result in unique, unconventional designs filled with gentle humour and subtle rebellion.

You can browse Zaleika's designs in our spring Craft Showcase: Earthly Pleasures until 28 June.
