Join BIRCH studio residents as they explore the visual communication of flags 🏳️

This exhibition coincides with BIRCH’s 3rd Birthday! Come celebrate 3 years of BIRCH Studio & Gallery! 🎂

Flags are polarising. They can be used as a weapon of division and harm, or have the ability to unite one another and uplift against oppression under the common banner.
The interpretation and meaning behind the visual, folding upon and into each other over time, layer by layer.
What then is hidden? And what is revealed?

Up Next at BIRCH: “Have you thought of making t-shirts?”, a solo exhibition by Jon Edgley

Sparked by the inevitable question every artist hears when showing someone a drawing. An exhibition about freeing creativity from the side-hustle, reclaiming art for pure joy and curiosity, and confronting the pressure to monetise your creative practice.

The answer is: “Yes, I’ve thought about making t-shirts. But I don’t want to, because it’s boring and they fall apart in a year—so here are some cut-outs I made from cardboard instead.”

Jon Edgley is an artist and graphic designer based in London (FROM LEASOWE! REPRESENT!). Jon’s practice consists of drawing, curation, and performance. His practice explores his existence, class, and position as a 9–5 worker, artist, curator, and any other role required of him in his daily life.

Up Next at BIRCH: his heart is half of mine (Leth mo chroidhe in Cú cen col), a solo show by Ruairí Valentine 

his heart is half of mine (Leth mo chroidhe in Cú cen col) explores intimacy, radical q***r bodies and world-builiding through the lens of Irish mythology and folklore.

Through painting, sculpture and autofictional writing, Valentine poses the process of mythopoesis as a tool through which we can imagine alternative worlds and share them through traditional oral and visual storytelling languages loaded with q***r semiotics.

Ruairí Valentine is an artist and writer engaging with ideas around q***rness, gendered embodiment and mythopoesis. Drawing irreverently from a combination of their Irish heritage, pan-Celtic mythology, genderq***r embodiment and Q***r theory, they construct semi-fictional narratives that intersect and interrupt reality, offering an alternative perspective from which to observe and critique that which we consider to be fixed normality.

Ruairí is the winner of our open call earlier this year to award a solo show to a Merseyside based, working class, LGBTQIA+ Artist. This exhibition was made possible with funds from Merseyside Arts Foundation, who worked with us to support this opportunity.
