Restored to its Edwardian Arts and Craft splendour, Winterbourne House is a unique heritage attraction – set within seven acres of beautiful botanic gardens. Winterbourne is a hidden gem – home to beautiful antiques and over 6,000 plant species from around the world. Wander along the woodland walk, stroll through the hazelnut tunnel, cross the 1930’s Japanese Bridge or simply soak up the tranquillity of this perfectly English Edwardian home. Winterbourne is situated at the University of Birmingham, only minutes from Birmingham city centre and is easily accessible by road, rail, bus and bike. Facilities:

- Garden shop and plant sales
- Tea room serving hot and cold lunches, tea and cake throughout the day
- Interactive exhibition rooms on the ground floor - accessible to wheelchair users
- 7 acres of Botanic Garden
- Meeting rooms for hire
- Second hand book shop

Last admissions to the house and the garden is half hour before closing.

🍂 Autumn has well and truly arrived at Winterbourne!

Our Horticultural Supervisor, Fumiko, has been working her seasonal magic, creating another stunning wreath display on the door opposite the Lean-to Glasshouse, and she’s even added a fabulous collection of funky gourds along the walls!

It’s the perfect dose of autumnal colour… with just a hint that Halloween is creeping closer! 👻

You'll definitely smell this before you see it! 👀

Meet Bulbophyllum echinolabium - one of the fascinating orchids growing in the Gilbert Orchid House.

But here's the unusual bit… 👃 Its distinctive scent is designed to attract its pollinators: blowflies and flesh flies. 🪰 In fact, it smells remarkably like rotting meat… and that’s exactly the point!

🎨 Introducing RBSA on Tour!

We’re delighted to welcome the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA Gallery) to Winterbourne for this special exhibition celebrating the breadth and creativity of its current membership.

With a history spanning more than two centuries, the RBSA has played an important role in supporting and promoting visual arts in Birmingham. Based in the Jewellery Quarter, its gallery hosts more than 20 exhibitions each year, alongside artist talks, workshops and other creative events.

RBSA on Tour showcases an exciting mix of styles, subjects and artistic media, offering visitors the chance to discover work from a diverse group of contemporary artists. Even better, all the artworks on display are available to purchase, so you could take home your very own piece of the exhibition. 🖼️

General admission is required to view the exhibition.

One of Head Gardener Paul’s favourite autumn combinations is looking beautiful across the garden right now. 💜🤍

The rich purples and crisp whites of callicarpa, ophiopogon and cyclamen come together to create a striking display - proof that autumn gardens can be just as colourful as any other season.

Spotted! 👀

If you didn’t already know, John Nicolson - the last private owner, bequeathed Winterbourne House and Garden to University of Birmingham. And their tiny mascot, Old Joe, decided to make a little day trip to our garden! He even took a picture with Head Gardener, Paul, who was glad to give him some expert gardening tips.

Autumn is starting to make an appearance across the garden, but the garden isn’t quite ready to let go of summer just yet! 🌸

Our Horticultural Supervisor, Fumiko, deliberately leaves some produce in the garden to overripen, helping provide food for the garden over winter. 🌱

These green beans in the Walled Garden have been left to mature until they become dry, brown and wonderfully crusty! 🍂

But here’s the twist… the beans change colour as they mature.
