We live in the centre of Neolithic Orkney which is a constant inspiration with its beautiful landscapes, big skies, frothing seas and majestic lochs. After a 5 year sabbatical, building our house, Michael has returned to his love of Woodturning. A self-taught wood turner with over 25 years’ experience, with an eye for the potential of natural wood he has developed a skill to enhance its natural fo

rm, shaping the pieces using the lathe and hand carving. These skills and techniques allow him to obtain the desired result, quality and finish for each piece. He also uses exotic timbers, leather and silver to embellish pieces. The nature of the timber results in a wide variety of pieces, shape, size and individuality.

Working on this oak piece today. The grooves are cut with a Manpa round carving bit in the micro motor. Hopefully get it finished tomorrow

Finally got a nice sphere turned from a bowling ball. Adding a very plain decoration to each of the six faces. This one is inspired by the replica petrosphere on display at the Maes Howe visitor centre here in Orkney

A blank that I cut from a sycamore log yesterday. It had been kicking around for a while and I thought it might be past it. It looks interesting so I’ll give it a go

Could go from hero to zero if this repair doesn’t work out. It’s not all just fun and games at the lathe, there are pressure jobs as well
