BEGINNERS HIEROGLYPHS COURSE

Have you ever wanted to learn to read and write ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs?
In this 8-week course you can!

Bolton's Egypt are partnering with Hieroglyphs with Hazel to bring you a complete beginners course. Spread over 10 weeks, this course will take you through the basics of the Egyptian language. By the end of the course you will be able to recognise and understand the most common text in museums around the world.

Tuesday 12th May - Week 3 - Titulary

Tuesday 2nd June - Week 5 - Royal Names and Honorific Transposition
Tuesday 9th June - Week 6 - Formulas
Tuesday 16th June - NO SESSION

COURSE FEE:
The course fee is £65 - thats less that £10 per session!
This covers all 8 sessions. The fee also covers all materials that you will need during the course. Refreshments are also provided during the sessions, which are included in the fee.

With spectacular coloured wall scenes adorning the temples and tombs throughout Egypt, this study day focuses on ancient Egyptian art, those who created it and those who copied it. The sessions will look at how and why such scenes were produced, deciphering key images, texts and the materials used, both in ancient times and by archaeological artists such as Howard Carter, whose huge watercolour copied from the Deir el-Bahari funerary temple of Hatshepsut is currently in Bolton on loan from the Egypt Exploration Society. Yet our Bolton Study Day not only looks at the importance of Bolton's Egyptian collection, its unique blend of workshops provides the opportunity to get up close and learn at first hand.

The day will consist of a lecture, three hands-on workshops, an optional exhibition tour and a film.

The Study Day will conclude with after-hours wine, nibbles and chats with the experts in the Bolton’s Egypt galleries themselves.

Have you seen this on display in the Bolton’s Egypt gallery yet?

Having remained in storage for over 100 years, this remarkable 2000 year-old Romano-Egyptian head covering is an unbelievable example of survival.
It was excavated in 1911 by archaeologists working for Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie.
Made of woollen felt it was susceptible to deterioration, but survived almost intact.

It is one of only three known in the world, and now fully conserved, Bolton’s is the best example!

It was made possible thanks to the generosity of Darwen-based company Ritherdon & Co, who funded the conservation work by The Restoration Studio’s Jacqueline Hyman.
