For we've dug out a photograph of one of the most famous nurses from the . In this rather faded pic, Pte Bert Andrews of the Welsh Regiment, recovering from wounds in a Belgian hospital, stands with a fellow soldier and Nurse Edith Cavell. Nurse Cavell was celebrated for treating both allied and German soldiers without discrimination and for helping more than 200 allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. For her activities, she was arrested and sentenced to death under German military law. Despite International condemnation and pressure for mercy, she was executed by firing squad on 12th October 1915, aged 49.

It's and who doesn't love a steam train! This oil painting depicts the GWR locomotive The South Wales Borderers and was painted, on the decommissioning of the engine in 1965, by Cardiff-based artist Private Archie Jones MM, of the 6th Battalion, South Wales Borderers.

1915, at the Second Battle of Ypres, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd battalions of the Monmouthshire Regiment were devastated under relentless shelling, gas attacks and mass infantry assaults. Despite overwhelming odds, they held the line with extraordinary courage but at a terrible cost that left hundreds killed, wounded or missing. Among those killed on that day was 2nd Lt. William Lucius Palmer, 3rd Mons, aged 24. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres.

in 1867 five men of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot took part in the action that was to see them each awarded the Victoria Cross. Privates Bell, Cooper, Griffiths and Murphy, and Assistant Surgeon Douglas, mounted a rescue, in a rowing boat in heavy seas, to save men who had disappeared on the island of Little Andaman. According to the citation, which was published in the London Gazette on 17th December 1867, the men "...behaved in an equally cool and collected manner, rowing through the roughest surf when the slightest hesitation or want of pluck on the part of any one of them would have been attended by the gravest results. It is reported that seventeen officers and men were thus saved from what must otherwise have been a fearful risk, if not certainty of death."

For we have this fantastic depiction of Corporal Edward Chapman's VC action which took place on the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Germany, in April 1945. The cartoon was published in November 1965 in an issue of The Victor, a very popular weekly comic published for boys from 1961 until 1992.

The museum has been invaded...by a battalion of tiny soldiers! These diminutive Victorian red-coats have taken over the craft area and are threatening to overrun the gallery, but we don't really mind. These adorable little soldiers were made by children visiting the museum over the Easter break and as far as we're concerned, they are very welcome to stay! Come along and make your own soldier to swell our ranks, or take him home with you - we wouldn't blame you!
