Ella Squirrell
Performance and Display

Bridport Contemporary is pleased to present a selection of work by artist , exclusively on Artsy. (Online exhibition only, please see link below.)

Ella Squirrell (b. 1995) graduated With a BA in Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art in 2018. She is a multidisciplinary artist working with painting, film, photography and performance. Her primary focus is painting, informed by experiencing the complexity of gender and mixed ethnic identities. Ella is fascinated by observing people, their behaviour, temperament and clothing, and questioning display and social ‘performance’. Painting semi-fictional portraits in real and imagined scenarios, Ella plays with fact and fiction in an attempt to understand her own sense of ‘being’.

“Working with gouache on paper and watercolour on gesso panels, Ella’s craft is process-driven, with the material often revealing its meaning with each stroke of the brush. “Gouache is fast drying, so it’s very immediate and I enjoy the freshness of it,” she says. “I never start with an expectation of my painting, but I’m always looking for a surprise, that small moment that speaks to me and offers a resolution. Sometimes I’ll miss it and the painting will become something else. The concept of time in Ella’s work, of a moment captured, contorted and changed, is…articulated in her use of colour. “I feel colour very deeply. They have healing qualities, I believe,” she says. “Someone once said my colours are anachronistic. I’m very inspired by fading frescoes and hues that have the mark of time.””

Ashley Greaves
S*x, Death and Art

Bridport Contemporary is pleased to present a selection of work by artist Ashley Greaves, exclusively on Artsy. (Online exhibition only, please see link below.)

Ashley Greaves is a Bridport based artist whose work explores themes of s*x, death and art, primarily through the medium of painting. His way of working is deeply personal and intuitive, and he prefers to allow the material and his emotional response to dictate the direction and outcome of the painting. This exhibition features a series of small paintings made with oil on board, and includes work exhibited at the Royal Academy and ‘The Discerning Eye’ Exhibition at the Mall Galleries. For much of his life Ashley has lived and worked in London, and has exhibited both internationally and nationally.

“Painting has always been about my emotional response to the material and its meltdown of any set ideas that I may have started out with. It has lead me down some unexpected paths some of which I don’t always recognise but which I am compelled to go down… the excitement at the prospect of new visual realities being discovered. In this state of flux, prescribed ideas of beauty go out the window. Error becomes truth… absurdity becomes valid. This is not and cannot be a process without its flaws. Ultimately it is down to me as the artist to accept or reject what I see in front of me and hope that what remains is insightful. I find the act of painting generates more painting in the sense that it extrudes the subject matter that has lingered longest in my mind; what I would call my back catalogue of unproven thoughts, and then questions whether it should be considered any further. Painting becomes the conduit by which I can unravel this complex mix of s*x, death and art.”

Aimless

Bridport Contemporary is pleased to present a selection of work from the series ‘Aimless,’ by artist, photographer, videographer and poet .artist

Now based in Bridport, Dorset, Marc Atkins has lived and worked for many years in London, and has also spent extended periods in Rome, Detroit, New York, Warsaw and Paris. His images have been acquired for public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, London, Tate Gallery, London and The University of Cambridge. Solo photography books include ‘The Teratologists’, ‘Liquid City’, ‘Thirteen’, ‘Warzsawa’, and ‘Catalogue’. His work is also included in several international photography books (alongside work by Bourdin, Rheims, Mapplethorpe and Rankin).

‘Aimless’ is a body of work in which Atkins further expounds his ideas on the elegant and desolate in journeys and landscapes. “Each image is a pause, a stalled step, a moment of incertitude, an apprehensive hesitation in the capriciousness of place, containing within it the expectation and disquiet of a relentless horizon.”
