Houston, we have a problem!

The museums computer systems are awfully outdated. All but one of our machines is running windows 10, support for which ended in the autumn…. The laptop that isn’t running windows 10…? It’s on XP!!! Support for that ended in 2014!

A couple of weeks ago my laptop gave up the ghost. Although a few months ago we registered with a charity that links charities who need equipment with businesses who are upgrading and giving away their old pcs, we are concerned that the urgency of replacing equipment used by staff and volunteers, not to mention the server that powers our cataloguing system, means that we need the machines quicker than any grant or charitable organisation will get them to us.

Imagine our joy when we received a donation from a Brixham resident of £1000 towards our equipment! The donor wishes to remain anonymous but we want to say a massive thank you!

We are now looking for further donations to support our IT needs. Every £5, £10, £50 or £1000 (😂) donation that you make will support the infrastructure of the museum and support us in protecting the history and heritage of Brixham for future generations. We are looking to raise around £2000 more for IT equipment.

Donate here and if you want to ring-fence your donation for IT there is a box where you can put a reference or message https://www.brixhammuseum.uk/donation-here/

Thanks to all our supporters! Whether you visit us, volunteer with us, put £5 in the donation box, tell all your friends how great the museum is, leave a trip advisor review or make a massive donation of £1000, we appreciate you all.

We are so looking forward to a talk by Jon Rosebank, the author of A Spring Marrying on Friday!

Set in Brixham (with a whole chapter set in one of the museums cells!) A Spring Marrying is a tale of romance, crime and fishing!

We loved - the detailed description of life on a fishing smack
- the meticulously researched details of village life in Edwardian Britain
- the poetic tone
- the weight of the build up to the First World War in a rapidly changing world
- The well-researched use of Devon dialect

The book and tickets are available from the website museum shop or website.

We have had a lovely donation including a copy of the Brixham Echo. We don’t have a collection of this publication in our archive and the national newspaper archive doesn’t have it either.

Do you remember this publication? How long did it run for?

Do you have any copies in the attic? Please let us know if you have any to donate! I’ll share some articles from it soon!
