The Russell Connection: Winchcombe Pottery 1926–2026

Discover the fascinating story of Winchcombe Pottery, one of Britain’s most influential studio potteries, and its close relationship with Gordon Russell and his family. Helen will guide visitors through the exhibition, exploring how Sydney Russell’s encouragement helped Michael Cardew establish the pottery in 1926, the role Gordon Russell played in promoting Winchcombe’s handmade ceramics through his Broadway and London shops, and the enduring influence of Ray Finch and later generations of potters.

Naomi Games and Henrietta Goodden are the daughters of two of the Festival of Britain’s most prominent designers; Games designed the famous Festival Symbol and Goodden designed the Lion and Unicorn pavilion on the South Bank, London.

The Russell Connection: Winchcombe Pottery
1926–2026
A dive into the connection between two icons of Cotswold craftsmanship.

Discover the fascinating connections between the Russell family and the pottery, from Gordon Russell’s father introducing pioneering potter Michael Cardew to the former Winchcombe site, to the stories that shaped its legacy.
Part of a wider programme of five centenary exhibitions across the Cotswolds, with a special celebration weekend at Winchcombe Pottery on 12–13 September.

🎬 Join us online next Friday 8th May at 6pm

We’re delighted to present Designing from Home, an award-winning short documentary recently named Best Short Documentary Film at the London Independent Film Festival.
Following the screening, Harriet and Sue will join us for a live panel discussion and Q&A.

Created by Dr Harriet Atkinson and Dr Sue Breakell, this 16-minute film explores the North London home of graphic designer FHK Henrion, where he lived and worked for over 40 years.

Through archive material and interviews with Henrion’s children, the film offers a fascinating insight into creativity, design, and life at home.

The Paris Cabinet (Design No. 157)

One of the most admired pieces in the collection.

Crafted primarily from rich walnut, this cabinet showcases a beautiful mix of English woods including holly, yew and laburnum, with ebony, the only foreign wood, used sparingly to striking effect. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, from the intricate inlay, where the grain follows the natural flow of leaves, to the finely crafted drawer fronts and decorative dovetails.

Look closely and you’ll notice something special at every turn, solid walnut panels, not veneer, delicate oyster grain laburnum, and octagonal legs inlaid with ebony to catch the light.

A perfect example of Gordon Russell’s commitment to craftsmanship, quality, and timeless design.
