Broadway Museum was at this evening! The 414th Olympic Games held on Dovers Hill! The first in 1612! Well done to Andrew Bailey- Shin Kicking Champion and Henry- King of the Hill, after completing a fiendish set of challenges. British Traditions! You cannot beat them! ❤️

Broadway looked a lot different a few weeks ago.
If you listen closely, you might hear one Becki trying not to slip.

Its currently 23c, much cooler than the start of the week 🌞

🚧 Traffic jams in the Cotswolds? See what came through Broadway's toll gate for yourself in this 250-year-old book.

Broadway sat bang on the main coaching route between London and Wales — and every single horse, coach, cart and traveller that passed through had to stop and pay John Barker, Broadway's toll gatekeeper, before they could continue their journey.

The proof is right here. Thanks to The Hive archive, we have John Barker's actual Toll Book from the 1770s in our coaching exhibition. Every payment. Every traveller. Every coach that rolled through Broadway was recorded by hand, 250 years ago.

Imagine the scene: a queue of mud-splattered coaches, impatient horses, weary passengers and merchants all waiting at a gate on what is now one of the prettiest High Streets in England. 🐎🐎🐎

Sound familiar? Broadway's been busy for centuries.

Come and peer into John Barker's records for yourself. Our coaching exhibition brings the whole era to life, from the tollgates and highwaymen to the moment Brunel's railway made it all obsolete overnight.

🏇 Ever wondered what it was really like to travel between London and Wales in the 1700s?

Before the railways changed everything, Broadway was one of the most important staging posts in England. Weary travellers, mail coaches and merchants all passed through stopping to rest, eat and change horses before braving the next leg of the journey.

Step inside our 17th-century coaching exhibition and discover:

🔑 The drama of life on the road, speeds, discomforts and dangers
🦹 How travellers stayed one step ahead of the highwaymen
📬 The mail coach system that connected a nation
🚂 How Brunel's railway ended an era almost overnight

Broadway's famous coaching inns were the beating heart of this story, The Lygon Arms (originally the White Hart Inn), The Fish Inn, The Bell Inn, and The Angel Inn. All four still stand in Broadway today. Come and discover the stories behind the stones. 🌿

11th-17th May Mental Health Week.

A quiet hour with history: how museums can support wellbeing.

Museums can play a quiet but powerful role in elevating our mental health. They offer space to slow down, reflect, learn, remember and connect. Whether someone visits us to explore local history, spend time with family, enjoy a peaceful gallery, or simply take a break from everyday life, cultural spaces can help people feel grounded.

Through Mental Health Awareness Week, we invite you to take a small action for your well-being. It might be taking a quiet walk, visiting a place that inspires you, talking to someone you trust, or spending a few mindful minutes with an object, artwork or memory that matters to you.
