The Isle of Arran Heritage Museum was founded in 1976 (open to the public in 1979). Originally the site of a small school, buildings were a croft and smiddy including a farmhouse, cottage, bothy, milkhouse, laundry and harness room. You may have seen one of our recent acquisitions in the Banner a few weeks ago!!

Fiona Macdonald, aged 90, made an emotional return to the Arran Heritage Museum for the start of their 2026 season opening, unveiling a hidden piece of family history. A Vernis Martin Victorian-era bible box, long forgotten on her grandmother’s shelf, has been revealed to have deep ties to Arran and the 19th-century lives of the Williamson/ Currie family from Whitefarland and Lochranza.

This small family heirloom, measuring only 7 x 5 x 3 inches, belonged to Janet Williamson, bn 1876 in Lochranza. Janet, daughter of Malcolm and Flora Currie (née McMillan), was part of a community that gathered at the Free Church of Scotland. The bible box, a staple in late 19th-century homes, housed the family bible, hymns, and church documents, with its paper mache design and red velvet lining preserving family treasures.

Fiona’s visit to the museum was part of her journey to trace her ancestry to Whitefarland, Laggan and Lochranza.

During her visit to Arran Heritage museum she discovered that lost cousins in Australia had also been exploring their family roots, creating online family trees and strengthening their own Currie/Williamson connections to their Arran heritage.

Arran Heritage Museum provides a genealogy service featuring numerous existing family tree histories. This service assists individuals with historical connections to Arran in tracing their family lineage back to the 19th century and beyond, offering a captivating glimpse into the lives of our ancestors.
