Bromsgrove Society of Model Engineers BromsgroveSME caters for all model engineering tastes. Our site at Avoncroft Museum in Worcestershire

Bromsgrove Society of Model Engineers caters for all model engineering tastes, although the majority of members are primarily interested in model or miniature railways. Our site within the grounds of Avoncroft Museum of Buildings, close to Bromsgrove town centre in Worcestershire, features a 385m ride-on miniature railway track catering for 2.5, 3.5 and 5 inch gauges together with a 16mm garden r

ailway (32mm gauge) and an increasingly popular Gauge 1 (45mm) track. Motive power our ride-on track is a mix of coal fired steam and battery electric (mainly diesel outline) locomotives, while the smaller scales have steam (coal, meths or gas fired) models together with battery powered steam and diesel outline locos. Visitors of all ages to Avoncroft Museum are given rides on our ride-on track on several days throughout the year to coincide with events at Avoncroft. These days can get quite busy with up to three trains running on our fully signalled line. We also have regular open days on all of our tracks when visitors are most welcome to bring and run their locomotives. Full details are given on our website bromsgrovesme.co.uk and Avoncroft’s site www.avoncroft.org.uk
In July 2017 we opened our new station, built entirely by BSME members, which can accommodate two fully loaded trains under cover. Other facilities at our site include a well appointed clubhouse and an under-cover steaming bay for the ride-on track.

The sun’s out and the temperature is in double figures, so it’s time for a few laps of steam at Bromsgrove.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s Modern Traction Day is Saturday, 4th July 2026. Usual Ts & Cs apply - details to follow. By way of a tribute to our late friend Rob Denton (& Tony Jones) we are trying to attract as many of Rob’s locos as possible. He attended our MTDs in 2021, 2022 and 2023 as well as jointly running at Engine House, Highley for SVR’s Hydraulic themed Gala. Please reply either via Facebook or Messenger to Us/Me (Clive Wilson). I’m aware of where some of the locos now reside but especially interested in some of those which didn’t make it before - eg Peak. Dependant upon interest we may have to expand the event. The main event will be open to all as well, including 32mm Garden Railway and 45mm NG or Standard Gauge Models. Clive Wilson - Committee Member
(Apologies my grandsons figure, Rob was always keen to promote interest in the younger ones plus he couldn’t drive 4 at once).

Rob Roy Rally

Despite a wet weather forecast the day kept mainly dry and, with thirty odd visitors, we had the makings of a great day.

We had eleven Rob Roy Locos of varying ability to steam 'on shed' accompanied by a variety of other 3.5 inch locos. They included an A3 Papyrus Pacific, Ivatt Class 2, Princess Marina and a Rainhill Rocket.

After a busy morning the buffet lunch was much appreciated. Steaming continued in the afternoon plus family and friends having fun riding our 5 inch Class 20 Diesel loco or gazing at the garden and gauge one railways which were also in operation. For those with a marine tendency we even had a wonderful and varied display of model boats.

So why not join us next year and join in the fun?

Final preperations for the 3.5in Rob Roy rally tomorrow (Sat 20th Sept.) 10am to 4pm.
