New book - The Empty Straths - is available at Brora Heritage!

Nick has been busy again, a compliation of journeys in one wonderful book.

Mountains - Moorlands - Empty straths and the stories they still tell.

In 2005, Nick Lindsay set out from Altnaharra in Central Sutherland and walked home to his back garden in Brora, a three- day journey through a landscape few people ever see.

In 2008, he ventured further, walking from extreme north-west tip of the UK at Cape Wrath to Brora, a week of wild camping in some of the most remote country in Britain.

In 2026, at the age of 69, he took on a new challenge, crossing from Borrobol to Balnacoil, again on foot and again alone.

The Empty Straths brings these three remarkable journeys together- past and present - in a single account of walking, landscape, history and personal reflection. It is a story of wild places, changing times and the traces of the people who once lived, worked and thrived here.

A celebration of remarkable landscape - Empty only of people.

Brora Blethers tomorrow at Brora Heritage centre, 10.30-12.30. Come along and add to the craic or just listen to the stories.

Last week we looked at some of Margaret Mackintosh's photos, including some school pics. Everyone had a ball trying to identify them - although Pam and Margaret knew almost all of them.

Come along - you never know what the topic might be or where the thread takes you...and it's free!

NEW BOOK LAUNCH - Brora Heritage Centre tomorrow (Wednesday), from 11am until 3pm.

Well-known local fundraiser and Rotarian Alistair Risk MBE is launching his autobiography, A Life Less Ordinary, edited by Clyne Heritage Society Chairman Nick Lindsay, at Brora Heritage Centre tomorrow.

And the title couldn't be more appropriate!

From adventures in the Arctic and managing some of Britain's finest hotels to encounters with royalty and celebrities, Alistair has packed an extraordinary amount into more than eighty years – alongside a lifetime of work for tourism, Rotary, fundraising and his community.

Now the stories – funny, moving and occasionally almost unbelievable – are together in one book.

And in typical Alistair fashion, he's turned that into another fundraising opportunity too: all net proceeds from sales of A Life Less Ordinary will be donated to Clyne Heritage Society.

So come along to Brora Heritage Centre between 11am and 3pm tomorrow, meet Alistair, buy a copy and help us celebrate both the book and the man behind it.

And yes – he'll be signing copies! 📖✍️

The book is also available by post - contact info@broraheritage for details.
