Benthall Hall NT

Benthall Hall NT Benthall Hall The current house was built in 1535 but there have been Benthalls living on this site since the medieval period.

During this time the house has been part of many interesting events from the Civil War to the Industrial Revolution. During the Civil War, the house was seized by the Cavaliers and run as a Parliamentary garrison. The Royalists attacked but they were unsuccessful in retaking the property. Between 1720 and 1934 the Benthalls lost ownership of the estate, and one of the new custodians George Maw too

k full advantage of the close proximity to Ironbridge. George Maw and his brother were able to develop their tile business at Benthall because of the clay and coal available in this area. They even used the house as part of their sales technique by laying tiled floors here. The tiled floor in the entrance hall has only recently been rediscovered, because an oak floor had been put on top of it. In addition, George Maw was a distinguished botanist; he assembled a collection of rare plants from around the world in the garden, including a large collection of crocuses, which can be seen today in the spring and autumn. As well as the crocuses to see in the garden, there's also an intimate and carefully restored plantsman's garden, an old kitchen garden and interesting Restoration church.

🌼🦋 The grass is growing at Benthall Hall… and that’s great news for wildlife! 🦋🌼

You may have noticed areas of longer grass in the Kitchen Garden as part of No Mow May — and we’re keeping it going through the summer months too.

By mowing less often, we’re creating important habitats for butterflies, bees and other pollinators. Longer grass provides shelter, food sources and spaces for insects to complete their life cycles, helping nature thrive right here at Benthall Hall 🌿

You might also spot the beautiful pattern cut into the lawn, inspired by the iconic designs of Victorian tile designer George Maw. Follow more of his story throughout the property, and find out how Maw's passion for plants, science, and craft continues to shape Benthall Hall today.

As part of the our new exhibition celebrating the work and travels of George Maw, we are delighted to be able to offer tile decorating workshops on the site, hosted by our friends from Craven Dunhill.

This workshop enables you to create your own unique tile using the traditional decorating process of tubelining. Using a clay slip to create an outline you will then infill your pattern with our beautiful coloured glazes (although they will be mostly grey on the day!).

Workshop sessions will take place in the Farmyard barn and are expected to last around an hour depending upon the complexity of the design you choose. Workshop sessions are open to children and adults.

The workshop fee is £18 per participant. Children under 10 may need assistance from their grown-ups and all under 16s must be accompanied. There is no charge for non-tile makers. If you are not a National Trust member you will be able to access the workshop space without entering the main property.

Once your tiles are finished, they are dried before being fired to 1030 degrees. This usually takes around 2 weeks, but can take longer at busy times. We will then post out your tile to you, if you are not local enough to collect (please select this option, if it is required, when you book).

To book a session, please visit our website https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/shropshire-staffordshire/benthall-hall/events/1aee2e21-373f-4e2b-be2a-7e494996e405

📢📢 New pin badge at Benthall Hall!!! 📢📢

As part of the new George Maw exhibition we have recently launched at Benthall, we are excited to announce new pin badges for sale! The badge brings together the three key themes from the exhibition. Based on a beautiful encaustic tile design, the badge brings together a delicate crocus and ammonite, celebrating George Maw's tile business, passion for plant collecting and interest in geology. Look closely and you'll also spot George's initials "GM" woven into the design.

Available now from visitor reception for a suggested donation of £3. Each sale helps us look after Benthall Hall for everyone, for ever.
