As a special thank you for their dedication and support throughout the year, our Archive and Front of House volunteers from The Castle Heritage Centre recently enjoyed a trip to the National Trust's Trerice, near Newquay.

The visit provided a wonderful opportunity to explore some of the fascinating historical connections between Trerice and Bude. The house was once owned by the Arundell family, who also owned Ebbingford Manor in Bude.
During their visit, our volunteers enjoyed a tour of the house and a talk exploring the history of the Arundell family, discovering more about the heritage that connects these two historic properties.

Our volunteers play such an important role at The Castle Heritage Centre, from working behind the scenes with our archives to welcoming visitors and sharing their enthusiasm for our local history. This was a lovely opportunity to bring everyone together, recognise their contributions and enjoy a well-deserved day out.

I have always been a beachcomber and find on the coast materials, ideas and inspiration for making birds and pictures. Birds, boats and the sea feature in most of my work.
Without any formal training I have developed my own style and skills through trial and error, through experience. However, I have exhibited around the country and written several books on World Crafts and illustrated many more.

A glimpse of Bude through the eyes of a local artist over a century ago.

Gwendolen Cotton (nรฉe Coode) grew up at Polapit Tamar, a grand residence near Launceston, before making her home in Bude.
Between 1911 and 1927, she lived at โ€˜Penrestโ€™ on Summerleaze Crescent, capturing familiar scenes of the town and coastline in her beautiful watercolour paintings.
