Andy says,"Astronomy is fascinating, beautiful and inspiring. I will explain how astronomy contributes to science, technology, the economy, and education. However, our study of the sky is now under threat - from light pollution and from mega-constellations of satellites streaking across the night sky. I will explain the problem and what we can do about it."
Andy Lawrence is the Regius Professor if Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh. He specialises in the study of quasars - giant black holes in the centres of galaxies - but also over many years has been involved in projects mapping the sky at many wavelengths. Streaks appearing in survey images led him into being concerned about the pollution of the night sky, and the more general idea of space environmentalism.
