Bursledon Windmill was built in 1813 to replace an earlier post mill that dated back to 1766. The constuction of the current mill was made possible when Phoebe Langtry asked the Bishop for a grant of 30 poles of land (approximately 750 square metres) ‘on top of the free hill in Bursledon upon which lately stood a windmill’. In the same month the mill was mortgaged for £800 by William Langtry, Phoe

be’s son, who is believed to have become the miller. The Langtrys failed to redeem the mortgage and the mill passed out of their hands in 1821. At the end of its working life the mill was owned by the Gosling family who took over the mill in 1872. Between 1978 and 1991, the mill was restored by the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust. The sails were replaced in 1990 and the mill opened to the public in May 1991 and now stands as Hampshires only working windmill.
