As part of Volunteers' Week we are profiling some of the wonderful people who make up our team of Volunteers.

Today we have David and Deborah who work alongside our Curator and Archivist on a weekly basis. David has been with us for nearly 15 years and Deborah 5 years. They are currently working on a project in our medal room, researching the stories of the soldiers behind the medals.

Thank you both for all that you do!

Yesterday we had a special visit from Justin Maciejewski - Director at the National Army Museum Justin has been meaning to visit us for quite a while now so it was an absolute honour to finally welcome him to Bury to experience the museum for himself.

As part of the visit, Justin had a tour of the galleries before meeting the wider team to discuss all things military museums. We also chatted through our future plans for the museum including the upgrade of the exhibition spaces.

Thanks so much for visiting Justin - we hope you enjoyed your visit!

Today marks the start of an annual UK-wide campaign to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers.

As a small independent museum we wouldnโ€™t be able to do what we do without them. They give so much to our organisation and we'd like to thank each and every one of them for their time, effort and contributions.

Earlier this week we had a visit from Major Mike Dowling and the sister of the late Fusilier Alan Lowe to donate several items from his private Gulf War collection and service with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

Personal items such as his uniform, photographs and mementos were donated alongside a diary written by Alan during his service both in the Army Reserves , Germany and in the first Gulf War.

Alanโ€™s former Commanding Officer, Major (Rtd) Mike Dowling also kindly donated several letters which Alan wrote to him during his time in the Gulf. All the donated items have been gifted into the collection and will be a valuable asset to the museum when planning the new gallery for the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in years to come.

Alan served with the Army Reserves initially in Ashton Under Lyne but whilst in Germany he volunteered to join 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and went to the Gulf to take part in Op Granby where he served for a year. The items donated are in perfect condition and Alan wrote in his diary every single day about the challenges of being in a war zone.

A big thank you to Mike and to Cheryl and the wider Lowe family for your kind donation.

Yesterday we welcomed our president Jonathan Kemp London back to the museum where he gave a talk about his personal journey with mental health and his current quest to walk 4,200km in 296 days to raise vital funds for several mental health charities. His talk was honest and extremely moving and we're so grateful to Jonathan for stopping off on his busy schedule to share details of his journey.

To find out more, donate and to download a FREE copy of his memoir - Finding Peace of Mind click on the link below.
