Last week, we were delighted to welcome artist Donald Taylor, to see our Store Highlights & New Acquisitions Exhibition, featuring 5 pieces of his work. 🖼️

On his visit, he also gave 2 new pieces of work to Bury Art Shop of Koi carp, which are now for sale! Talking about the paintings, he said:

“Photographs of people from long ago are, quite categorically, of the dead; but in paintings, of figures, portraits, plants, nature and objects, their continuing being seems to exist seamlessly in the material reality of the painted surface, which is like a of field of aesthetic energy actively charged by the artist’s calligraphic language in which nothing ever passes; as in Einstein’s theory of relativity, as matter approaches the speed of light, times slows and for photons of light itself, time has ceased.” (© Donald Taylor)

Bury Art Museum want to wish everyone a happy Bury Pride 2026! 🌈

Our art gallery exhibition Store Highlights and New Acquisitions features the works of LGBTQIA+ artists (including 2 of Donald Taylor's portraits of fellow artist Jamie Collins).

Collins’ piece flows from his 8 and half years relationship with his partner Terry, which was lived under the shadow of AIDs. Although Terry passed in 1993, Collins uses his work as an expression of grief, and to give hope of everlasting life and a comfort of to those who have experienced similar loss. 🩵

This week’s is focused on wallpaper for The Art of Wallpaper: Morris & Co at Watts Gallery. We’ve chosen the green floral wallpaper in The Peace Offering by Charles Haigh Wood, from our permanent collection. 🍏

In the painting, there seems to have been an argument, and the girl’s book has been ripped. Her brother stands with the peace offering of an apple.

The children in the painting are very likely the artist’s own. The sulking sister could well be his daughter, Vivienne. Vivienne Haigh Wood famously married the poet TS Eliot in 1915. Their whirlwind marriage was influential on the work of TS Eliot, particularly The Wasteland, which was published in 1922.

In celebration of yesterday, the theme this week is all about bees and insects. We’ve chosen this Vincent van der Vinne from our permanent collection – can you spot the insects? 🦋

The insects are an important part of the picture’s symbolic meaning. Although the vase is blooming with colourful plants, like all cut flowers, they will soon start to die. However, we are also shown hope and light with the bird’s nest in the foreground, using this as a symbol of the new life amongst the inevitable decay.

🌷 This is a copy of Jan van Huysum’s Flowers in a Terracotta Vase, part of the National Gallery’s collection.
